The upcoming release of Purgatory/Paradise marks the return of legendary rock band, Throwing Muses. This will be their first new collection of music in over ten years - and will be published as a book.
The 32 track Purgatory/Paradise album will be available on 29th October 2013 as a deluxe 64-page book and a full studio album on CD.
This exclusive edition from the experimental HarperCollins imprint, The Friday Project, contains photography and artwork from both Kristin Hersh and David Narcizo of Throwing Muses. Founding member and lead singer, Hersh, has also written insightful and revealing notes and essays to accompany each song as well as transcribing the lyrics. Drummer David Narcizo has designed the book and artwork.
Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Throwing Muses were the first American act to sign to cult independent record label 4AD, pioneering 'alternative rock' long before the term even existed. The band was originally formed in 1983 by step-sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly.
The young band's music drew influences from post-punk, folk and rockabilly without ever settling into standard genre patterns.
Throwing Muses won instant acclaim in the UK with their eponymous debut album, their originality confirmed by two EPs, Chains Changed and The Fat Skier, in 1987. The following March saw the release of second album House Tornado, the record was accompanied by a memorable UK tour which saw the Muses supported by fellow Bostonians, Pixies. Five full-length albums, two collections of their work and numerous solo excursions then followed for all members of Throwing Muses.
Purgatory/Paradise will be the band's first collection of brand new music in over ten years.
Join Kristin Hersh for an exclusive evening in celebration of the release of 'Purgatory/Paradise', the first album of new music by Throwing Muses in ten years. Publishers The Friday Project and your hosts Rough Trade East present a Q&A session with Kristin and a live acoustic set of new and classic music on the night. Kristin will also be signing copies of the new release and meeting fans.
The album will be available to buy or collect for all those attending, a day before it's official release date.
