January 2006

09/01/06 The High Dials - War Of The Wakening Phantoms - Although hailing from the Francophone Montreal, The High Dials sound like pure first-wave British invasion with their close breathy harmonies, dreamy pop collages and intelligent wordplay. In fact anything on 'Wars Of The Wakening Phantoms', their mystically-titled second album could have been lifted from some lost Kinks sessions, if they morphed into the late career Flaming Lips without anyone being the wiser, right down to the high-minded philosophy couched in deceptively beautiful psychedelia and the smart, sardonic asides. This time out the Canadian quintet abandoned both their mod retro aesthetic and the concept album approach of 2003's 'New Devotion' for a more enigmatic song suite where the phantoms of the title aren't the kind that go bump in the night, but are the ghosts of lost love and innocence. If nothing else, this record is a compelling journey through heartbreak. They have toured with the Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Earlies and have become big faves of both bands. (tell me more)

16/01/06 The Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control - Third full length proper from Arkansas 3 piece, The Gossip. The first thing that strikes you is the rhythm, The Gossip have been making punks dance since their debuted 5 years ago, but its now that they have fully realised their soulful, and jagged pop, after much fine tuning of their skills and sounds. You can hear everything from Dischord to Motown in brace's guitars, and with the addition of former Chromatics / Shoplifting drummer they have a new thundering beat. The next thing that smacks you is Beth's voice, all the guttural blues of the south is in that inimitable instrument. Recorded at Seattle's Bear Creek by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). On Kill Rock Stars.

23/01/06 Jenny Lewis With The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat - Known and loved by many as the enchanting front-woman for La's critically lauded Rilo Kiley, Jenny's vocal and songwriting gifts have continued to blossom at a rapid rate since that band's first album in 2000. 'Rabbit Fur Coat' may be her solo debut, but there's nothing virginal about it. From the opening track 'Run Devil Run' to the closing reprise of 'Happy' Jenny's hauntingly soulful voice, sometimes bursting with buoyant spirit and at other times plaintive and world wearied, is deep, sensual and beguiling. The album was lovingly crafted together during short spurts of recording activity in the San Fernando valley, Portland, Oregon and Lincoln, Nebraska - due to the shared production duties of celebrated finger-picking guitar prodigy M.Ward and Nebraska's resident production genius Mike Mogis. The magnificent backing vocals come courtesy of gospel singers Chandra and Leigh Watson (The Watson Twins). Talented friends were roped in between tours and recording sessions and stand-out track- a cover of the Travelling Wilbury's 'Handle With Care' - with its phenomenal sing-a-long crescendo - features vocals shared equally by Jenny, M.Ward, Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) and Ben Gibbard (of the Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie). On Rough Trade.

30/01/06 Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas - Scottish chanteuse Isobel Campbell formally of Belle And Sebastian, spent the initial part of 2005 completing work on 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas', the collaborative album recorded with former Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age singer, Mark Lanegan. although much of the album was recorded with Campbell in her native Glasgow, and Lanegan in Los Angeles, the two actually came together in the studio in L.A. in may to cut a number of new tracks for the release, including a new Lanegan penned song, 'Revolver'. Isobel initially met Mark Lanegan in Glasgow while he was on tour with Queens Of The Stone Age. Professing to be a big fan of her music, Lanegan made an offhand comment about how he would love for them to make a record together. Isobel took the idea and ran with it, writing a number of songs with Lanegan in mind, communicating with him via the internet, and posting over tracks for him to add his vocals to. Together they are the new Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra with her voice angelic and his rough. The overall sound is kind of sun-bleached and psychedelic, with a little bit of folk or country. This is a fantastic album that deserves you time and repeated listens.

06/02/06 The Horror The Horror - The Horror The Horror - The Horror The Horror are a Swedish band that have, in the space of 2 double a-side 7" singles and a stunning debut album, managed to distil the coolest music from the last 30 years or so. With their blend of influences including early New York punk bands such as Television, The Modern Lovers and Velvet Underground as well as the British indie scene of the early nineties, The Horror The Horror have developed a unique sound highly appraised by audiences and critics all over Sweden, and now they're ready for the rest of the world! Their music combines a seemingly impossible blend of total nonchalance and heartfelt compassion. Holding it all together are the melodies that are the core of The Horror The Horror's songs. This is your favourite new band! Essential stuff!!

13/02/06 The Broken Family Band - Balls - Steven Adams and his twisted band of brothers return once more to delight and inspire. Bitter, wasted and ever beautiful 'Balls' shows off The Broken Family Band's love of indie rock, heavy metal, country-flavoured ballads, punk and arty pop meanderings, without the slightest thought for fashion or trends. Guests this time are limited to Kansas pop princess Piney Gir on vocals, with Goldrush's Joe Bennett and the Folk Orchestra's Gill Sandell chipping in here and there. In the past the band have recorded in rural Norfolk, but for Balls they decided to record in the big city. it took them 8 days with Brian O'Shaughnessy (Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, Beth Orton) in an east London studio to knock this one out, and they chose to record on old fashioned tape without any of that digital witchcraft... Utterly brilliant as ever and on Track And Field

20/02/06 James Roberts - Everything You Know Is Right - James Roberts has been writing downright beautiful ballads for a long while now, but this is undoubtedly his most intimate and personal record, particularly as it is the first time he has recorded without his brother. Having spent his teenage years in the Sea Urchins, and the nineties in the greatest 'lost' band of the decade, Delta, he returns with his debut solo album. The lp was originally tracked in three days at Birmingham's Dep Studios, James just accompanied by fellow ex-Delta member Louis J Clark. mixing and overdubs then continued at Alpha's Studio in the Somerset countryside with Alpha producing. Other guests on this album were Alex Lee (Suede) and Allison Brice (Eighteenth Day Of May), the latter singing on 'It's All Made Light'. Roberts proves himself more than the match of all the acclaim heaped on Delta. This album nods to the late-60's school of love/byrds pastoral psychedelic pop, with some discreet electronic burbling and lush string arrangements putting it into the category marked 'timeless' rather than 'retro'. Cd only on Dell'orso Records.

27/02/06 Colossal Yes - Acapulco Roughs - Widely known as the 'drummer dude' in Comets On Fire, Utrillo Kushner's musical talents range far beyond the drunken-master-style wailing he unleashes on any given night with the Comets. It's his skills as a songwriter and bandleader that impress on the sentimental rock stylings of 'Acapulco Roughs'. Having tickled the ivories for close to a decade, Kushner assumes command of the keys in Colossal Yes and steps it up as a full-fledged piano man. Think Badfinger, Mercury Rev, Spirit, Procol Harum, the band features members of The Cuts and Drunk Horse. A fabulous album that keeps growing with repeated listenings, say yes to the yes!. 06/03/06 Mystery Jets - Making Dens - The album was recorded at the bands studio on Eel Pie Island with maverick producer James Ford in the autumn of 2005. The album title 'Making Dens' is about being able to hide away from the world and create, and Eel Pie is certainly the ideal place for that, situated in the middle of the Thames near Twickenham, it is magical place, a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city, with a thriving community of artists and ship builders, the album is seeped heavily in its atmosphere. with songs such as 'Soluble In Air' being recorded in the open air of the boat yard and all string sections arranged and played by the band. Their songs range from the oddball ramshackle numbers with male voice choir harmonies to grand oral expeditions to progressive tangential pop moments to strange time-signature changes. They have an anything-goes attitude to making music and it makes 'Making Dens' a thrilling and joyous debut. The first 30,000 copies come in a digipak.

13/03/06 Cortney Tidwell - Cortney Tidwell - Ever records is proud to announce the release of the debut self titled six track mini album by Cortney Tidwell. Cortney's unusual and uncompromising approach to her work has resulted in a sound that is quite unlike any other. This is music of fascinating beauty: desolate, country-infused laments sprinkled with subtle flourishes; skeletal, eerie, haunting structures that reach out far beyond their geographic roots. And the voice is even more remarkable, an arresting and vulnerable instrument that recalls the likes of Liz Fraser, Hope Sandoval and Leslie Feist whilst maintaining a character all its own.

20/03/06 Megan Reilly - Let Your Ghost Go - Second album from NY via Memphis singer/songwriter maintains the sense of understated elegance that was apparent on her debut 'Arc Of Tessa' but leaps light years ahead in melody, musicianship and craftsmanship, outstripping normal expectations for sophomore albums. Her band of aces, Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu), Steve Goulding (Mekons, Graham Parker, Laura Cantrell), Tim Foljahn (Two Dollar Guitar, Cat Power) and Eric Morrison (Home) are augmented by amazing guest performances by Ted Reichman (Marc Ribot, Emigre, Tzadik) on accordion, James Mastro (Ian Hunter, Health And Happiness Show) on guitar, and Jean Cook (Ida, Assif Tsahar) on violin and the perfectly chosen Sue Garner and John Mcentire. behind the boards. Megan struggles with ghosts, both personal & distant, over 10 country tinged tracks. The album is sprinkled with two ideal covers, including Dylan's "The Wedding Song" that she was born to sing.

27/03/06 - Caroline - Murmurs - Following the critical praise of last year's otherworldly 'Where's My Love' single, Tokyo, Japan's Caroline releases her enchanting debut album. 'Murmurs' is a thing of blessed beauty that defies easy description. It is nearly impossible to attach words to the supernatural brilliance of Caroline's songs. From the weeping trumpet and innocent lyrical sentiments of opener 'Bicycle' to the cinematic tide of 'Winter' - whose orchestral weight and lyrical hopefulness threaten to crush the listener from the inside-out. 'Murmurs' is a truly masterful album. No samples were used: dozens of live acoustic instruments - pianos, harps, bells, guitars, strings and hand drums - are shaped around Caroline's crystalline voice and threaded together by warm bass and dense beats. On Temporary Residence.

03/04/06 Nathan Fake - Drowning In A Sea Of Love - Straight out of the Norfolk countryside, 22 year old Nathan Fake is a most unlikely saviour of electronic music. he has been playing and writing music since he was a young teenager, and his first record 'Outhouse' was released in late 2003 on Border Community. since then he has also released tracks and eps on Saw Recordings and provided remixes for such prestigious labels as Fine Records. Nathan also plays live sets on his laptop, which has seen him showcase his material in places that include Berlin, Barcelona, Paris and Amsterdam. Now returning to Border Community, Nathan Fake is set to release his debut album 'Drowning In A Sea Of Love', a truly enchanting collection of rocktronica at its finest - loaded with casio riffs, soaring fake-guitar lead lines, single live take recordings and a heap of lighters-in-the-air moments. containing the original live take of the psychedelic epic 'The Sky Was Pink' (prior to its remix transformation into the electro anthem of last summer), in addition to recent 7" 'Grandfathered' this is a ballsy, gutsy eleven track wall of computer-noise, underlined by a rock-solid production ethic which belies Fake's tender years. Who needs a full band anyway? homegrown UK talent like Nathan Fake doesn't come along every day, and it is little wonder that he is one of so many people's 'tips for 2006': a true breath of fresh air in a dance scene desparately seeking direction, with this long awaited debut album sure to speak for itself.

10/04/06 - Semifinalists - Semifinalists - Ferry Gouw, 24 year-old spokesperson of Semifinalists, arrived in London at the end of the 90s from his native Indonesia a mass of creativity and ideas. Soon after meeting Americans Chris Steele-Nicholson and Adriana Alba, themselves not long of these shores, their first attempts at a soundtrack for a friends film were conjured up and messed about with. Goofing around in a rehearsal space from this period were borne the embryonic sounds of the Semifinalists stunningly original debut album 'Semifinalists'. Imagine all the 80s pop hit records, melted into one huge blob, which then re-cut and re-constructed by King Crimson and Sonic Youth. References can be made to the Flaming Lips, The Field Mice, New Order, The Unicorns, Cindy Lauper and everything in between. The Semifinalists sound is schizophrenic, captivating and beautiful. Think aneclectic mix of perfect pop, sweeping regal indie and the occasional earth rumbling climax. Cd only on v2.

17/04/06 El Perro Del Mar - El Perro Del Mar - Beautiful Swedish singer-songwriter releases her Kate Bush-meets-Phil Spector debut album through Memphis Industries. The album is a collection of sad yet beautiful 60s tinged paeans to love and loneliness. Already a star in her native Sweden El Perro Del Mar's (The Dog Of The Sea) other-worldly vocals and magical arrangements have already led to her touring the UK in January with kindred spirit Jose Gonzales who she will tour with again around the album release. Lead off-track 'Candy' and the heartbreaking 'Party' pin down the El Perro Del Mar sound: minimal, an acoustic wash, a boom of tympani, some rippling chimes with a kind of a lo-fi Phil Spector production. Cd only.

24/04/06 The Late Cord - Lights From The Wheelhouse - The debut mini-album from The Late Cord, a fascinating and very appealing pairing; a partnership between John-Mark Lapham (The Earlies) and Micah P. Hinson. the first fruit of this pairing is the mini-album entitled 'Lights From The Wheelhouse' and it's quite an introduction. Micah and John-Mark will reunite later this year to make a full-length The Late Cord lp for 4ad. In the meantime, they are both adding the finishing touches to new day job projects - Micah P. Hinson (via Sketchbook) and The Earlies (via 679 Recordings) will both be releasing albums in 2006. With these two young musicians individual careers taking off so rapidly, it's a miracle that 'Lights From The Wheelhouse' even happened. It's a good thing it did happen, because this short recording holds enough weight and beauty to last for the rest of the year.

01/05/06 Roddy Frame - Western Skies - The legendary composer, singer and leader returns to the scene with his third album under his own name. this record follows a similar pattern to 2002's brilliantly received 'Surf' released on the Redemption label. The 11 tracks feature delightfully soulful, emotive vocals from Roddy, expertly crafted songs and Roddy's accomplished, immaculate guitar work. Whereas 'Surf' was an entirely solo effort, 'Western Skies' was recorded and co-produced with Jeremy Stacey in his Chelsea studio with Roddy playing guitars and occasional bass, Jeremy playing drums and other instruments and some additional bass from Mark Neary. There is more light and shade than on 'Surf' but it's still an old-style back to basics record, all recorded on tape with nothing digital in sight. One man, one voice, one hell of a record!

08/05/06 Jolie Holland - Springtime Can Kill You - Following in the steps of her lauded 2003 basement-tapes 'Catalpa' and 2004's studio-debut 'Escondida', the new album takes Holland's sepia-toned, song noir to a transcendent level. 'Springtime Can Kill You' 12 track song-cycle is a crossroads where haunting meets joyful - a voice from the heavens singing stories of the underworld. Holland's songs rise and fall like heavy eyelids and convey the peace of that place between asleep and awake, Creating a special place for you to be. There sounds from past and present-tense waltz together to a never-ending melody that flickers between folk, jazz, blues and pop. Holland's lyrics conjure characters and situations one might find in the surrealistic celluloid of Jim Jarmusch.

15/05/06 !Forward Russia! - Give Me A Wall - 'Give Me A Wall' is the debut album from Leeds combo !Forward Russia! and released on their own Dance To The Radio (run by guitarist Whiskas). The 11 track album includes singles 'Twelve', 'Thirteen' and current hit 'Nine'. Produced, mixed and engineered by Paul Tipler, the album is a clattering, exuberant and spikily attractive post-punk masterpiece. Think a mix of Fugazi and later day Dischord records, The Rapture, At The Drive In and Bloc Party but with real energy and passion. Limited edition vinyl.

22/05/06 Beirut - Gulang Orkestar - This week's hottest band. While it may sound like an entire Balkan gypsy orchestra playing modern songs as mournful ballads and upbeat marches, Beirut's first album, 'Gulag Orkestar', is largely the work of one 19-year-old Albuquerque native, Zach Condon, with assistance by Jeremy Barnes (Neutral Milk Hotel, A Hawk And A Hacksaw) and Heather Trost (A Hawk And A Hacksaw). Horns, violins, cellos, ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiels, drums, tambourines, congas, organs, pianos, clarinets and accordions (no guitars on this album!) all build and break the melodies under Condon's deep-voiced crooner vocals, swaying to the eastern European beats like a drunken 12-member ensemble that has fallen in love with the Magnetic Fields, Talking Heads and Neutral Milk Hotel. Cd only on Da Ding.

29/05/06 Jets Overhead - Bridges - Yet another one to watch from Canada, this five piece deliver a fantastic no nonsense indie rock album which every track seems to be a gem. 05/06/06 Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out Of This Country - Glasgow's Camera Obscura return with a wonderful new album. 'Let's Get Out Of This Country' is a master class in intelligent, melodic 'retro-modern pop'. 20 seconds into the first track (and first single) 'Lloyd I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken' and you will know this is a great band truly hitting their stride. Producer Jari Happalainen (The Concretes, Ed Harcourt) has shaped a cohesive collection of classic songs which are, at turns upbeat ('If Looks Could Kill', downbeat ('Country Mile'), hooky ('I Need All The Friends I Can Get') and epic ('Razzle Dazzle Rose'). Lead singer/songwriter Tracyanne's musical influences include the songs of Jimmy Webb, Hatch And Trent, The Supremes, Lloyd Cole, Connie Francis, Sandy Posey, Skeeter Davies and David Lynch film soundtracks, among many others. On Elefant records.

12/06/06 Vetiver - To Find Me Gone - 'To Find Me Gone' is the second album by Andy Cabic's ever-evolving band Vetiver, released two years after the debut self-titled release. Andy has since toured the world, usually as a member of Devendra Banhart's band, and sometimes even with Vetiver. In those two years, Vetiver has expanded into a full-on singer-songwriter band/project, aided and abetted by some of the best players (and usually his best friends) in the extended family of which Cabic finds himself a member. Once again skillfully crafted, produced and mixed with Thom Monahan (as on the debut), 'To Find Me Gone' is a much different, more free and mature effort, reflective of Cabic's growth as a songwriter over the last two crazy, wonderful years. Musically, there's a dreamy Topanga Canyon vibe on select songs (maybe that's the pedal steel calling on 'No One Word'), and there's also plenty of crunchy candy for those who have appreciated Cabic's recent nod toward the magic of '70s-era Fleetwood Mac (check out the screaming guitar outro of 'Red Lantern Girls'). yet everything is simply, amazingly Vetiver, not anything else; 'To Find Me Gone' is Andy Cabic's own original statement, one that many will consider as one of the finest albums of 2006. 13 track double vinyl set on Fat Cat.

The album picks up where Adamson left off - his trademark, shiny, cinematic beast of a sound marching into town once more. The album also comes with a free 4 track bonus cd of previously unreleased material.

03/07/06 Loney, Dear - Sologne - Big big talent from Sweden, Emil Svanangen hits all the right buttons with his beautifully crafted songs about love and depair and everyday anxiety, he'll make the hairs on your neck stand up one minute then get your hips swaying the next. This is set to do what Bright Eyes and Sufjan Stevens did over the last few years. Loney, Dear is a one man band with nine members, and the alter ego of multi-instrumentalist and diy expert Emil Svanangen. In his tiny, sweltering Stockholm studio apartment, or in the cool basement of his parents house is where all the magic happens. The outside world has no idea of what's going on. Creativity explodes, an old clock walks tick-tack-tock onwards to the Loney, Dear prophesy. Two records a year is his m.o., and by new years eve of 2009, all is said to come to an end. Everything is recorded in a very modest home studio setup, using a mini disc mic and a set of headphones to avoid disturbing his neighbours. A fantastic album - a must hear.

10/07/06 CSS - Cansei De Ser Sexy - From Sao Paulo, Brazil comes CSS (5 women and one man), the first South American band Sub Pop has foisted upon the global marketplace. 'Cansei De Ser Sexy', Portuguese for 'Tired Of Being Sexy', is improbably, unbelievably and nearly eponymously their debut. It is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths ('Alala') and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing ('Art Bitch', 'Patins'). It's a sexy mix of ESG, the early Rough Trade label releases, Bush Tetras, Kraftwerk, Peaches, 99 Records and The Breeders. It's energetic, has buckets of attitude and sits heads and shoulders above the competition.

17/07/06 Espers - 2 - Balancing the hypnotic overtones and droning repetition of krautrock with the delicate purity of folk, Philadelphia's Espers have been making some of fringe folk's most compelling music for some time now. With their second full-length album, Espers bring their psyche-folk-drone to a new level of intensity, following the path set by the wonderful 'Weed Tree', and further exploring the textures that its expanded line-up permits. The group, grown from its core of Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and Brooke Sietenson, now counts cellist Helena Espvall, drummer Otto Hauser and bass player Chris Smith among its full-time members. The interplay, particularly of the multiple kinds of stringed instruments, creates a hallucinatory web of overtones and undertones, sounds that reinforce and contradict each other in ways that are almost physically intoxicating. 'Li' raises the bar for the genre by bridging a strong connection with past masters (Pentagle and Fairport Convention) to a modern sound, without losing any of which made the originators special, or overloading hallowed grounds with technology and tactless innovation.

24/07/06 Blood Meridian - Kick Up The Dust - Blood Meridian singer/songwriter Matthew Camirand is a man with a diverse rock and roll history. At the moment, he's completely focused on Blood Meridian, whose 12-song, v2 records debut disc is titled 'Kick Up The Dust'. Camirand's band mates in Blood Meridian are Vancouver rock-scene luminaries Joshua Wells (drums), Shira Blustein (organ/pianos), Kevin Grant (bass), and Jeff Lee (guitar). together, they've created 12 stunningly diverse tracks for days when the skies are slate-grey and Jim Beam is the only friend worth turning to. About half of 'Kick Up The Dust' was recorded in Vancouver at the Hive Studios, which has recently spit out another couple of Camirand / Wells projects, Black Mountain and Pink Mountaintops. The other half was tracked on Vancouver island at Shawnigan Lake, where the bands friend Dante Decaro (Wolf Parade, Hot Hot Heat) has built a small studio aptly named 'Deadwood'. The record was then handed over to Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Unwound) in Seattle for mixing. It's a sour and cynical album, where the guitars weep, the drums swoon and the vocals could only give hope to those on prosaic. Mixing a spit-in-your-face punk attitude with a country flair that reeks of whiskey fuelled recording sessions and future mental illness, the skies are slate grey, someone's pissed on the campfire, the girl is never coming back and the train has broken down. It's an awesome album full of brilliant musicianship and honesty, with memorable tunes. (tell me more)

31/07/06 Various (Production) - The World Is Gone - Following a string of vinyl-only singles- the immaculate trio of tunes 'Hater', 'Foller' and 'Sir' Various (aka Various Productions) announce their XL recordings signing with this, their classic-in-the-making debut album. Various are one of the most thrilling electronic pop outfits to have emerged in years - ferocious beats that are manifestly rugged and raw, whilst the melodies are pop incarnate. on a various production, genre walls come tumbling down. From the very first moments of buzzsaw frenetics of 'Thunnk', the echo chamber warble of 'Don't Ask', the sweet oblivion of 'Soho', the apocalyptic drop of 'Sir' to the epic eastern grandeur of the title track 'The World Is Gone'. There are no handy pigeonholes to cling to, especially when the tougher electronic tracks are set against such sandy denny-inspired moments as 'Circle Of Sorrow' and 'Fly'. the audacious way various wilfully throw aside tags and conjure up a new form of pop is nothing short of breathtaking. One can safely say that Various are utterly singular in the contemporary music field, even more so because they are the complete creative package brimming with a vision that spills over into their stunning illustrated artwork, their fresh and bold production sounds and individual style. The mainframe of Various revolves around the two mysterious figures, Adam and Ian alongside an unnamed but amazing female vocalist. One of the records of the year. 07/08/06 Circulus - Clocks Are Like People - The medieval minstrals of acid folk are back, this time they've jumped five centuries into the future and have created a baroque-rock album of the highest calibre. The much improved and accomplished songwriting/production on 'Clocks Are Like People' shows Circulus in a more laid back and comfortable light. Key tracks 'Song Of Our Despair' and 'Wherever She Goes' have radio written all over them, whilst the Elizebithan harpsichord workout of 'To The Fields' or the moog soaked wonders of 'Bouree' prove that they have lost none of their creative appeal. Their music is a gentle fist fight between a group of under nourished sixteenth century court musicians and an acid soaked bunch of hippie rockers from the early seventies. Reality's a fantasy. 14/08/06 The Isles - Perfumed Land - Manchester's Melodic label goes from strength to strength and this debut album by The Isles looks set to be by far the label's biggest album to date. There is a real buzz on these twenty-something New Yorkers who have successfully distilled in their debut album everything that was good about Morrissey, Ian Curtis and Ian Mcculloch into a thoroughly modern package. The Isles either have the capacity to bend time and space or appear to have been born in the wrong time and place. because although their sound is very definitely in the now, it's almost as if they began writing whilst surrounded by the cream of British 80's 'miserablist' indie-pop, fell into a deep sleep and awoke with hit-seeking precision in a climate where their talents would be best appreciated. So we have ten songs which evoke English urban grey, wearing the latest New York fashion. January's striking single 'Eve Of The Battle' switches from Bunnymen to Strokes with the change of a chord, whilst 'Flying Under Cheap Kites' revels in its excess of melody and discotheque-style backbeat. 'Summer Loans' has an unmistakably east coast groove but such an intrinsically familiar tapestry of woven guitar parts and vocal melody you'll swear you've been getting up to dance to it for the last ten years. Limited double yellow vinyl set. (tell me more)

21/08/06 Various - Rogue's Gallery : Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs And Chanteys - A Hal Willner Production - While working on the two 'Pirates Of The Carribean' films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set (with a lot of exclusives) include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Van Dyke Parks, Jolie Holland, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. 'Rogue's Gallery' offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years. (tell me more)

28/08/06 The Sunshine Underground - Raise The Alarm - The early singles showed promise, but the debut album demonstrates that this is a band with class and intelligence. While a flux of guitar-led bands take either the mournful route or the upbeat one, this Leeds three piece - named after a Chemical Brothers' track - have decided to take a different route to stardom, namely a blend of Happy Mondays-esque funk and no-nonsense ballsy rock. hence the 'Psychedelic' label, perhaps, but that's probably more to do with their predilection for substances of a social nature. 'Raise The Alarm' starts brightly, all upbeat and full of attitude, then dips wonderfully into more thoughtful territory on the album's highlight, 'Somebody's Always Getting In The Way', before rejoining the fast lane with the driving 'Borders'. Huge choruses and anthemic sounds weave their way through much of the material in a Doves / Stone Roses type way. On City Rockers. (tell me more)

04/09/06 Fundamental - All Is War (The Benefits Of G-Had) - Fundamental have been in existence since 1991, but have suddenly received considerable attention with their latest album 'All Is War (The Benefits Of G-Had)'. The album's release has been delayed after it received criticism in the UK press aimed at its explicit tracks - such as 'Cookbook DIY', which describes the process of building and exploding a terrorist bomb; 'Che Bin', which compares Osama Bin Laden to Che Guevara; and '786 All Is War', which calls for a Mosque on ground zero. Strip away the outrage, and what's left is an album pieced together with great consideration. musically it's audacious and, at times, exhilarating. 'Bark Like A Dog' marries Zulu chant with 'Anarchy In The UK' guitar and breakbeats. (the title refers to a peaceful protest through joyful noise prevalent in apartheid-era South Africa.) 'Parasites' slips from a mournful and redemptive raga into delta blues. This never feels contrived. Aki Nawaz has a passion for this kind of culture clash. It comes with a bonus dvd entitled 'When I Want Your Opinion i Will Give It To You' where members talk about the history of Fundamental plus footage including the first concert at Notting Hill Carnival. Cd/dvd only release on Aki's new label Five Uncivilized Tribes (tell me more)

11/09/06 M Ward - Post-War - M Ward's fifth album 'Post-War' was crafted in an attic in Portland over the past two years, and it's a sonic delight, filled with enticing nooks and crannies, radiating an innate and special grace. The songs immediately sound like you've known them forever; they unravel world-weary yet joyful tales of life, love and human kindness, helped in part by the talented friends who found time to drop in on the sessions - including Neko Case and Adam Selzer, as well as old monsters of folk touring buddy Jim James (of My Morning Jacket). Perhaps it's the rich and seductive voice - equal parts honey and cigarette smoke, Nina Simone and Tom Waits. Or perhaps its the guitar playing, the Appalachian folk / delta blues finger-picking, the exuberant, off-beat solos, the exquisite timing. Either way, it's a simple fact that M Ward quickly becomes a favourite of almost everyone who encounters his music. The roll-call of famous friends is expanding all the time: Meg White invited Matt to open for The White Stripes US live shows in 2005. Conor Oberst enrolled him in his acoustic Monsters Of Folk tours, and added him as Bright Eyes guitarist on 2004's Vote For Change tour. Last year, Matt co-produced Jenny Lewis' 'Rabbit Fur Coat', and in early 2006 Matt compiled and produced the John Fahey covers album 'I Am The Resurrection'. he's not just another indie-rock singer-songwriter who wishes he had been born a hundred years ago, Ward has imbibed a sense of remorse and cold-eyed mortality from country blues and Appalachian mountain music, and incorporates them into his own decidedly modern songwriting. On 4AD. (tell me more)

18/09/06 I'm From Barcelona - Let Me Introduce My Friends - Named after Fawlty Towers' Manuel and formed in Sweden by Emanuel Lundgren, I'm From Barcelona are 29 friends who gathered together and, fuelled with the energy that only a sunny summer holiday can bring, created an album of explosively happy pop songs. Emanuel's flat transformed into a factory where band members embraced a do-it-yourself ethic, coming and going loaded with banjos, accordions and kazoos and eventually releasing a diy ep. Their sound is one of grand indie pop with multi-part harmonies, strings, horns, banjo, accordion and kazoos. It features the should've-been-a hit-single 'We're From Barcelona' plus ten other equally essential joyous songs. (tell me more)
