Beirut - Gulang Orkestar - Our album of the year for 2006 - Already highly praised on internet sites and blogs, lauded by Pitchfork and Drowned In Sound, 4AD proudly present Beirut's debut album. Zach Condon - aka Beirut - is a twenty year old solo artist whose d.i.y. bedroom-produced music sounds like the glorious dance of a twelve piece Balkan gypsy orchestra. Beirut's debut album 'Gulag Orkestar' swirls and sways with a procession of horns, violins, cellos, ukuleles, mandolins, glockenspiels, drums, tambourines, congas, organs, pianos, clarinets and accordions, a wonderfully brash, drunken sound which whirls around Zach's histrionic and bewitchingly plaintive vocals. And remember we had it as our album of the week way back in May 2006 on import! BUY NOW |

Gossip - Standing In The Way Of Control - Third full length proper from Arkansas 3 piece, Gossip. The first thing that strikes you is the rhythm, Gossip have been making punks dance since their debuted 5 years ago, but its now that they have fully realised their soulful, and jagged pop, after much fine tuning of their skills and sounds. You can hear everything from Dischord to Motown in brace's guitars, and with the addition of former Chromatics / Shoplifting drummer they have a new thundering beat. The next thing that smacks you is Beth's voice, all the guttural blues of the south is in that inimitable instrument. Recorded at Seattle's Bear Creek by Guy Picciotto (Fugazi). On Kill Rock Stars. CSS - Cansei De Ser Sexy - From Sao Paulo, Brazil comes CSS (5 women and one man), the first South American band Sub Pop has foisted upon the global marketplace. 'Cansei De Ser Sexy', Portuguese for 'Tired Of Being Sexy', is improbably, unbelievably and nearly eponymously their debut. It is a thick, pulsating thing full of haphazard synths ('Alala') and a come-on of call and response that tears down any attempt at posturing ('Art Bitch', 'Patins'). It's a sexy mix of ESG, the early Rough Trade label releases, Bush Tetras, Kraftwerk, Peaches, 99 Records and The Breeders. It's energetic, has buckets of attitude and sits heads and shoulders above the competition. BUY NOW |

Lily Allen - Alright, Still -Lily Allen has done a 'Mike Skinner' and created an album full of songs that catch something ephemeral in Britain and in LDN in particular. She has, as The Streets man has done, been able to find a way to articulate a feeling that has yet to be articulated. The album is packed full of songs that tell stories of people she knows, people she's watched and the city she lives in. Like a mini snap-shot of a summer day in LDN she has caught it all in a brief moment in time. Everything perfectly balanced. and as she sees it. Her songs are very summery and the release date is no coinsidence, she will be the feelgood artist of the summer. The sound is a perfect mix of pop, hip-hop, reggae, and attitude. Lily is a genuine popstar, pin up, role model and our new shop favourite. BUY NOW |

Brakes - The Beatific Visions - it's high time for Brakes 2, so, on an invitation from Seth Riddle (husband of Cerys Matthews) they flew to Nashville, Tennessee to record with Stuart Sikes (Cat Power: 'The Greatest', White Stripes: 'Red Blood Cells'...). after a few days catching fireflys; drinking 45 ounce margheritas; swapping guitar licks and rocking on rocking chairs on various porches, they got to work at the house of David Studio, where records have been made by the likes of JJ Cale, Yo La Tengo and Elvis Presley. they recruited a few extra pairs of hands in the shape of local axe hombre Kevin Teel (lapsteel) and the man of 'the house' himself, Mr David Briggs (piano). David was an original muscle shoals band member and went on to play piano with Elvis between '68 and '77. Brakes asked him to lay down some 'ragtime' piano on 'If I Should Die Tonight' offering him $10. "well, that was worth 50c." He said. they squeezed in gigs at the legendary record shop 'Grimeys' and its sister venue The Basement in between sessions, and were greeted by Nashville with hollers, whoops and screams. if you loved 'Give Blood' then 'The Beatific Visions' is just as essential. The songs are short, sweet and demand repeat listens. they range from the ridiculous ('Porcupine Or Pineapple?') to straight up country ('If I Should Die Tonight' and 'On Your Side') to full steam ahead early Buzzcocks / Wire-esque post- punk rock ('Margherita' and 'Beatific Visions'). We love the Brakes here at Rough Trade Shops and you should to. BUY NOW |

Jenny Lewis With The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat - Known and loved by many as the enchanting front-woman for La's critically lauded Rilo Kiley, Jenny's vocal and songwriting gifts have continued to blossom at a rapid rate since that band's first album in 2000. 'Rabbit Fur Coat' may be her solo debut, but there's nothing virginal about it. From the opening track 'Run Devil Run' to the closing reprise of 'Happy' Jenny's hauntingly soulful voice, sometimes bursting with buoyant spirit and at other times plaintive and world wearied, is deep, sensual and beguiling. The album was lovingly crafted together during short spurts of recording activity in the San Fernando valley, Portland, Oregon and Lincoln, Nebraska - due to the shared production duties of celebrated finger-picking guitar prodigy M.Ward and Nebraska's resident production genius Mike Mogis. The magnificent backing vocals come courtesy of gospel singers Chandra and Leigh Watson (The Watson Twins). Talented friends were roped in between tours and recording sessions and stand-out track- a cover of the Travelling Wilbury's 'Handle With Care' - with its phenomenal sing-a-long crescendo - features vocals shared equally by Jenny, M.Ward, Conor Oberst (of Bright Eyes) and Ben Gibbard (of the Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie). Hot Chip - The Warning - Finally the two year wait is over and Hot Chip deliever their second album. 'The Warning' is an amalgamation of great songwriting and forward-thinking pop-production. it's an honest record - emotionally and sonically, made by people exploring sound in the warmth of home, not studio, and it is a brittle pairing of voices which sing of love, colours, loss, and warnings. It is the only record you will hear this year, which is brave enough to try and better all of the best records of yesteryear and tomorrow. It provides you all the samples, rhythms and beautiful melodies that you could ever wish for. If you want something which evokes the textures of Aphex Twin recordings, Madlib's sense of deranged hip-hop holiday, the intimacy of Prince's fantastically claustrophobic parades, and more than merely the spirit of a certain wonderful Paul McCartney experiments in disco, we and Hot Chip would recommend 'The Warning'.

Isobell Campbell And Mark Lanegan - Ballad Of The Broken Seas - Scottish chanteuse Isobel Campbell formally of Belle And Sebastian, spent the initial part of 2005 completing work on 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas', the collaborative album recorded with former Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age singer, Mark Lanegan. although much of the album was recorded with Campbell in her native Glasgow, and Lanegan in Los Angeles, the two actually came together in the studio in L.A. in May to cut a number of new tracks for the release, including a new Lanegan penned song, 'Revolver'. Isobel initially met Mark Lanegan in Glasgow while he was on tour with Queens Of The Stoneage. Professing to be a big fan of her music, Lanegan made an offhand comment about how he would love for them to make a record together. Isobel took the idea and ran with it, writing a number of songs with Lanegan in mind, communicating with him via the internet, and posting over tracks for him to add his vocals to. Together they are the new Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra with her voice angelic and his rough. The overall sound is kind of sun-bleached and psychedelic, with a little bit of folk or country. This is a fantastic album that deserves you time and repeated listens. BUY NOW |

The Pipettes - We Are The Pipettes - 'We Are The Pipettes' is without doubt the best pop album of the 21st century. The three polka-dotted princesses are expert purveyors of the pristine three minute pop song. They deal in the kind of timeless pop classicism that's destined to strike a chord with even the most world weary of cynics out there. 'We Are The Pipettes' over the course of 14 tracks invents the kind of girl-power the Spice Girls or Shampoo could only dream of. Whilst referencing the likes of the Shangri La's, Bananarama, The Crystals, The Shirelles, et al, both sonically and in style, perhaps the most apt comparison would be with The Ramones. Like da bruddas, these sisters have created a record that whilst understanding pop music's past are forging ahead in their own image. However it's the tunes that are the most important - quite simply nobody is writing more infectious. BUY NOW |

Vetiver - To Find Me Gone - 'To Find Me Gone' is the second album by Andy Cabic's ever-evolving band Vetiver, released two years after the debut self-titled release. Andy has since toured the world, usually as a member of Devendra Banhart's band, and sometimes even with Vetiver. In those two years, Vetiver has expanded into a full-on singer-songwriter band/project, aided and abetted by some of the best players (and usually his best friends) in the extended family of which Cabic finds himself a member. Once again skillfully crafted, produced and mixed with Thom Monahan (as on the debut), 'To Find Me Gone' is a much different, more free and mature effort, reflective of Cabic's growth as a songwriter over the last two crazy, wonderful years. Musically, there's a dreamy Topanga Canyon vibe on select songs (maybe that's the pedal steel calling on 'No One Word'), and there's also plenty of crunchy candy for those who have appreciated Cabic's recent nod toward the magic of '70s-era Fleetwood Mac (check out the screaming guitar outro of 'Red Lantern Girls'). yet everything is simply, amazingly Vetiver, not anything else; 'To Find Me Gone' is Andy Cabic's own original statement, one that many will consider as one of the finest albums of 2006. 13 track double vinyl set on Fat Cat.
