fantastic african jazz compilations.from 69 to 75. this is the cream of the series and features mulatu astatke - an ethiopian musician and arranger, known as %u2018the father of ethio-jazz%u2019. born in 1943 in the ethiopian city of jimma, astatke was musically trained in london, new york city, and boston, where he was the first african student at berklee college of music. he would later combine jazz and latin music influences with traditional ethiopian music. since 1997 %u2018ethiopiques%u2019 has been a series of compact discs featuring ethiopian and eritrean artists released by paris-based world music label buda musique, and now numbers 20-plus releases. in 2005, his music appeared on the soundtrack to the jim jarmusch film %u2018broken flowers%u2019. and yakermo sew is architect david adjaye's selection for our cd - the record shop: 30 years of rough trade shops.
