TEXT ADVENTURE
i believe in lassies
Release Date: 13/11/2007
melodious scottish experimental folk record from danananaykroyd guitarist david roy with stephen scott singing stuff. it's meant to be about girls but really brings to mind kit-kat wrappers, motorway flyovers and plastic bags snagged in highland bushes. vocal lines drift in and out and over a tangle of acoustic guitar lines, circuit bent speak and spelling machines, microphone crackle and casio keyboards. the songs are free without feeling intangible, and inventive without being esoteric. in a time when jim o'rourke records seem a touch hysterical, 'i believe in lassies' plays on the same themes - acoustic crescendos and vocal harmonies- but with all the warmth of being safe in your bedroom when it's cold and rainy outside. inspired by the computer game text adventure (specifically the first hitchhikers guide game) 'i believe in lassies' tracks unfold in whichever direction you want to take them. that's not just rhetoric. like ariel pink, there 8-track production is overcome by what can only be described as a grasp of 'how things should sound.' which means it's by turns bombastic and subtle, cute and devastatingly honest. but never predictable. press play, pick a thread and choose your adventure.
