'...and with the fading of the light' is a collection of short stories about life, death and making sense of the last breath. the debut album from jim muir slideshow is a scrapbook of other people's pain and suffering, cut and paste with empathy and sincerity and ultimately hope for a kinder future. the album includes record collector single of the month, 'after the fireworks pt. 1' and guardian guide single of the week, 'this is london'. it brings together jim's encounters with the human condition witnessed in his endless years as a junior doctor and psychiatrist. but, it's the delicate and uplifting subtlety he brings to these emotional subjects which makes this album distinctive. jim muir prefers to be known as a storyteller rather than rock musician. as with belle and sebastian, the small faces and jarvis cocker, '...and with the fading of the light' walks the line between haut-pop accessibility and kitchen-sink melancholia. like tom de quincey and a call girl sharing confessions in a plummeting 747, jim can be both erudite and blunt. 'how the north of england saved my life', recalls early 90s bagginess, (regretting the swagger) and 'whatever love means' is a heart-breaking, sobering reflection on the meaning of grief. the album closes with the flickering strip light lullaby, 'sleep well tonight'. the final chapter, laden both with irony and optimism, assures that after 20 hours in a&e and with enough opiates to blur the boundaries, sleep is certain.
