roebeck are one of those musical anomalies; they sound, simultaneously, like everyone and no one. on first listen you're reminded of air or zero 7. listen again and you'll hear the electro stylings of boards of canada or a more relaxed radiohead (especially on the eerily beautiful, 'starry night on emerald bay'). but it draws you in until all you can hear is roebeck and the influences become part of the formula and not the end result. electronic music can sometimes be labeled as distant or plastic sounding. it can be hard to penetrate and really get into. these songs are the antithesis to this way of thinking. crucially, beneath the shiny, electronic surface is a very soulful set of songs that don't leave you cold. real emotion lives within each fold of the music, and it's this human frailty that carries it above its influences.
