John Cage

John Cage (1912-1992) was an American composer, music theorist, writer, philosopher, and artist. He is widely recognized as a pioneer of post-war avant-garde composition. Cage's innovative approach to music involved the use of indeterminate techniques and unconventional instruments such as prepared piano and percussion ensemble. His works often incorporated elements of chance and environmental sounds. With his profound interest in Eastern philosophies, particularly Zen, Cage explored new ways to remove creative choice from composition. During his career, Cage collaborated with renowned dance companies and composed music specifically for their performances. Notably, he formed a lifelong relationship with choreographer Merce Cunningham.
