Karlheinz Stockhausen

Karlheinz Stockhausen was a German composer, known for his groundbreaking work in electronic music, aleatory in serial composition, and musical spatialization. He studied with Martin at the Cologne Musikhochschule but found inspiration from Messiaen's Mode de valeurs at Darmstadt. His compositions Kreuzspiel and KontraPunkte showcased his long-range serial process. Stockhausen made his first foray into electronic music while studying with Messiaen in Paris. His influence extended over a whole generation of European composers including Boulez and Berio.

Stockhausen's music became more relaxed and notationally exact after experiencing John Cage's influence and exploring electronic music. He had a significant impact on contemporary artists such as Iannis Xenakis, Morton Feldman, Pierre Schaeffer, John Cage, François Bayle, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani, Pierre Henry, Edgard Varèse, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Harry Partch, Pauline Oliveros,Krzysztof Penderecki,Morton Subotnick,Terry Riley ,Steffen Schleiermacher ,Conlon Nancarrow,Jean-Claude Risset.

Karlheinz Stockhausen is survived by his children Suja Stockhausen-Lefranc, Christel Stockhausen, Markus Stockhausen, Majella Stockhausen, Julika Stockhausen,and Simon Stockhausen.
