Paul Motian

Paul Motian was an American jazz drummer and percussionist, born on March 25, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He played a crucial role in liberating jazz drummers from strict time-keeping duties. Motian gained recognition in the late 1950s as part of a piano trio and later became a regular member of a renowned pianist's band for about a decade. In the early 1970s, he embarked on his career as a bandleader.

Motian formed notable groups throughout his career, including the longstanding trio with guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Joe Lovano. Additionally, he collaborated with younger musicians to interpret bebop standards in another significant ensemble.
