Sharon Jones

Sharon Jones was an American gospel-influenced soul/funk singer, born on May 4, 1956 in Augusta, Georgia. She was the lead singer of a soul and funk revivalist band based in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in North Augusta, South Carolina, she moved to Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in 1960. Sharon began her music career in the 1970s and gained recognition after being discovered by Gabriel Roth at a session backing soul singer Lee Fields in 1996.

She went on to record with Roth for various record labels including Pure Records, Desco Records and Daptone Records. Her debut album "Dap-Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings" was released in 2002 and marked Daptone's first album release. In 2013, Sharon was diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer but continued performing after treatment. Unfortunately, the cancer returned in November 2015.

Despite her health challenges, Sharon Jones remained a powerful force within the music industry until her passing on November 18, 2016 at age 60. Her inspiring journey is documented in the film "Miss Sharon Jones!" which showcases her resilience and talent as an artist. Known for her energetic performances and captivating vocals influenced by gospel music, she leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists today.
