The Miracles

One of the earliest Motown groups, The Miracles, was formed in Detroit in 1955 as The Five Chimes. Led by the talented Smokey Robinson, they quickly gained recognition and caught the attention of Berry Gordy. Renamed The Miracles in 1958, they released their first single on the End label. With a string of hits on Tamla Records throughout the 1960s, Smokey established himself as a key songwriter for Motown.

In late 1965, the group's name was adjusted to Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. However, after Smokey left in July 1972, Billy Griffin took his place and the name reverted back to The Miracles. They continued with Motown until 1976 when they moved to Columbia.

The Miracles had a number one US hit with 'Love Machine' in 1975 and remained an influential force in soul music. With their smooth harmonies and captivating performances, they paved the way for other legendary acts such as The Temptations and Four Tops.
