Description
The sixth album from French post-punk band Frustration was produced in-house at Mains d'Oeuvres. It was premixed by guitarist Nicus, mixed by Jonathan Lieffroy, and mastered by Krikor.
This album marks a shift since their last album, So Cold Streams. The sound is less radically cold wave and seeks a balance close to the instruments, with the guitar playing inside your face. There are traces of industrial on the drum skins of "Riptide," which is produced like a banger and sung like new wave.
Anne, from the Rouen combo Hammershoi, sings in German on "Vorbei," providing a rare moment of pause in this intense record. The cardio-packed drums of "Catching Your Eye" recall the joyful drone of "Shades from the past," confirming the formidable tandem of Mark Adolf and Pat Dambrine on bass.
"Secular Prayer," the closing track of the album, showcases that Frustration is as much in the Ian Curtis family as they are in the Ian Dury family. They take great care not to take themselves too seriously despite their success.
