The Slits
The Slits were a UK feminist punk outfit formed in 1976. The original lineup included Ari-Up on vocals, Katherine Corris on guitar, Paloma Romero on drums (later of The Raincoats), and Suzi Webb on bass. They gained attention for their aggressive and confrontational music, captured in their first two John Peel sessions. Despite their talent, they struggled to secure a record contract during the initial wave of punk. Eventually signed to Island Records, they released the dub-influenced album "Cut," which featured a controversial nude cover.
Over the years, the band experienced several lineup changes and collaborations with musicians like Prince Hammer and Don Cherry. However, by 1981, The Slits had lost some of their original edge and disbanded at the end of that year. In the new millennium, Ari-Up revived The Slits for a series of intimate live performances.
