Bongo Joe Records
The Bongo Joe label is dedicated to exploring contemporary underground worlds and unearthing rare musical gems from both near and far. With a focus on instruments, voices, and machines, Bongo Joe delves into the furrows of time to bring you an eclectic selection of music. Whether you visit their shop in Geneva or browse their online store, you'll discover a treasure trove of unique sounds that span genres and cultures.
What sets Bongo Joe apart is their homage to the legendary American street musician George 'Bongo Joe' Coleman. Despite lucrative offers from established venues, Coleman chose to play on the streets for over 30 years. In 1968, he recorded his only album Bongo Joe in San Antonio with producer Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records. This self-titled record embodies a pure DIY attitude and features music that was ahead of its time.
The family of George 'Bongo Joe' Coleman was thrilled when they discovered that a record store in Geneva had chosen to honor his name. The reissue of his album by Mississippi Records further solidified his legacy. Through their store and label, Bongo Joe continues to pay tribute to this remarkable artist while also introducing European music lovers to a world of captivating sounds.
