ECM Records, also known as "The Creative Label," is a German independent label that was co-founded by producer Manfred Eicher, Manfred Scheffner, and Karl Egger in Munich (Pasing) in 1969. With the label code LC 2516 / LC 02516, ECM stands for Edition of Contemporary Music and focuses on jazz and Western classical music. They showcase both acoustic and electronic artists who produce eclectic versions of contemporary music.

ECM's extensive catalog features a wide range of genres, from contemporary works by renowned composers like Steve Reich, Arvo Pärt, and Philip Glass to experimental and electronic jazz from artists such as Nils Petter Molvær, Pat Metheny Group, and Jan Garbarek. Over the past 40+ years, ECM has released more than 1500 recordings that have been acclaimed for their exceptional music quality, creative production techniques, and outstanding sound.

Although an independent label, ECM titles are distributed by Universal Music Group (UMG) in the US, Japan, and throughout Europe. However, they have also collaborated with other distributors over the years. Notably during the period when Polydor distributed ECM products in Germany; [l447694] was used for pressing identified by a CP suffix on labels and runouts. Afterward,[l25946] became their primary distributor.

American jazz pianist and composer, Keith Jarrett was born on May 8, 1945 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He began playing the piano at the age of three and continued until 2018 when he suffered two strokes that left him partially paralyzed.

Keith Jarrett is known for his own music publishing house. He has also made significant contributions to the jazz genre as a pianist and composer.

This double album, long anticipated, presents Keith Jarrett’s concert at the Gran Teatro La Fenice in Venice, from July 2006. The setting – one of Italy’s most famous classical venues – may evoke some parallels with La Scala, the pianist’s much-loved 1995 recording, but each of Jarrett’s solo performances is its own world, his protean creativity continually bringing new forms to light. 

La Fenice (The Phoenix) finds him channelling the flow of inspiration into a suite of eight spontaneously created pieces referencing everything from the blues to atonality. From the first flurry of notes, it is a consistently captivating journey. Between Part VI and Part VII, Jarrett surprisingly but very touchingly segues into The Sun Whose Rays, from Gilbert and Sullivan’s opera The Mikado. Encores are the traditional tune My Wild Irish Rose (previously recorded by Jarrett on The Melody At Night With You), the timeless standard Stella By Starlight, which the trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette often played (see for instance the albums Standards Live and Yesterdays).

The concert ends with a tender version of Keith’s tune Blossom, first heard on the Belonging album with Jan Garbarek, Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen back in 1974. La Fenice could be considered the culmination point of a series of solo concerts that began the previous September with the The Carnegie Hall Concert. Reviewing that performance, Fred Kaplan of The Absolute Sound wrote: “His concert pieces, all pure improvisations, are models of economy, themes stated, explored, varied on, departed from, returned to, done – and gripping from start to finish. The encores were similarly taut – and lyrical and gorgeous.”
