Madlib is a multi-genre producer, MC, instrumentalist, and avid crate digger and record collector. Born on October 24, 1973 in Oakland, California, he comes from a talented musical family with his father being soul singer Otis Jackson Sr., his brother being Oh No, his uncle being jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis, and his cousin being Kan Kick.

Rising to prominence in the late-'90s hip-hop scene, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. With his childhood friends in the Lootpack, he showcased his expansive style and deft touch for composition. As an enthusiastic crate digger with a deep reverence for jazz and soul music, Madlib embarked on ambitious solo projects that captivated audiences.

In addition to collaborating with artists like DJ Romes and Wild Child in the Lootpack, Madlib worked extensively with Los Angeles DJ Peanut Butter Wolf's Stones Throw label. He achieved critical success through albums such as Quasimoto's "The Unseen" where he handled vocals and production duties under both himself and his alter ego Quasimoto. Madlib also explored jazz through his Yesterday's New Quintet project where he played all the instruments himself.

Daniel Dumile, also known as MF DOOM, was a hip hop recording artist known for his unique lyrics and "super villain" stage persona. Born in London, England to a Trinidadian mother and Zimbabwean father, Dumile's family moved to Long Island, New York when he was young. Despite living in the United States, he remained a British citizen throughout his life.Throughout his career, Dumile adopted various stage names but became most recognized as MF DOOM. His music showcased his distinctive style and storytelling abilities, earning him a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.With his captivating performances and innovative approach to hip hop, MF DOOM left an indelible mark on the genre. Although he passed away on October 31st, 2020 at the age of 49, his legacy continues to inspire aspiring artists and fans worldwide.

Madlib wanted to record with Doom. The label found the guy, brought him out to the house in the east Los Angeles hills where they were based at the time. Most of the tracks were written and recorded there, Madlib making beats in a former bomb shelter downstairs, Doom writing on the back porch and recording in a bedroom. "Meat Grinder" and "Figaro" were made in the first couple days - songs lit, in the booth, with the best host / doing bong hits on the roof out in the west coast.

Madlib and Egon were in Brazil after the first round of tracks were put together, which Madlib bought to listen to on a CD-R. He made a few more beats out there which would end up on the album, using a portable record player, an SP 303 and a borrowed cassette deck. Meanwhile, some sad-sack jackass burned a copy of the demo and decided to post it on the internet - wasn't even tweaked and it leaked into cyberspace / couldn't wait for the snipes to place / at least a track list in bold print type face.

Declaring the album "already out," the artists more or less gave up on the record and it took months to bring them back to the project. Verse 2 of "Rhinestone Cowboy" was written and recorded over 6 months after the first verse. Sometimes he rhyme quick, sometimes he rhyme slow, or vice versa / Whip up a slice of nice verse pie, hit it on the first try.

Be weary of the "first try" claim - Doom tweaked and perfected his lyrics and delivery several times through late 2003. Madvillainy with no hooks and dirty beats was released March 23, 2004.
