MPS is a German jazz label that was founded in 1968 by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer. It started as a successor to SABA and quickly gained recognition for its exceptional sound quality. Often compared to the renowned Blue Note label, MPS became known as Most Perfect Sound.

From 1971 onwards, MPS releases were distributed by BASF and later by Metronome Records GmbH (renamed Metronome Musik GmbH in 1977). However, in 1983, due to declining budgets for recording jazz music, Brunner-Schwer shifted his focus to classical music and sold the rights of MPS to Philips. Eventually, the label found its way under Polydor's ownership and its recordings were re-released by Motor Music starting from 1993.

In Hamburg, Universal Jazz Germany took over the MPS archives in 1999 while Speakers Corner Records released various vinyl reissues. After ten years since Brunner-Schwer's passing, Edel acquired MPS's back catalogue from Universal on January 7th, 2014. Now led by Andreas Brunner-Schwer and Friedhelm Schulz, the team has returned to Villingen where they continue recording new material.

Oscar Peterson was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time. Born in Montreal, Quebec, Peterson began playing piano at a young age and quickly gained recognition for his technical prowess and improvisational skills. Throughout his career, he recorded over 200 albums and collaborated with numerous renowned musicians. His distinctive style combined elements of swing, bebop, and blues, earning him critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base. Peterson's contributions to jazz music continue to inspire aspiring musicians around the world.

With a career spanning over six decades, Oscar Peterson left an indelible mark on the jazz genre. His virtuosic piano playing captivated audiences worldwide, showcasing his impeccable technique and inventive improvisation. From his early days performing in clubs to sharing stages with legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Peterson's talent shone through every note he played.

Not only known for his remarkable solo performances, Oscar Peterson also led various trios throughout his career. These trios featured some of the finest bassists and drummers in jazz history, creating tight-knit ensembles that showcased their collective brilliance. Together they crafted dynamic arrangements that pushed boundaries while remaining accessible to listeners.

On Motions &amp; Emotions Oscar Peterson presents jazz versions of popular pieces from pop, easy listening and classic songwriters, as the quartet of long-time companions are washed in rich orchestral colours. Arranged and conducted by a magician of the guild, the great Claus Ogerman, who had previously worked for Tom Jobim. The Brazilian is also represented with his standard "Wave", in which the orchestra builds a luminous tropical backdrop for Peterson's fantastically dragged phrasing.

Peterson and Ogerman pay tribute to another great orchestra leader, Henry Mancini, in "Sally's Tomato" with feather-light trilling brilliance. Jimmy Webb's "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" experiences a metamorphosis almost into the classical - Ogerman opens infinite sound spaces here with the distantly indulging strings. Bobby Gentrys "Ode To Billy Joe" cleverly abducts Countryfolk into Bigband Jazz by means of fiery keyboard playing.

Finally the hits: from soul comes Bobby Hebb's "Sunny", whose theme the pianist here cleverly harmonises out to then decorate it bluesy in dialogue with the wind instruments. Burt Bacharach's "This Guy's In Love With You" shines with a leisurely late night mood and a pompous finale. Yesterday" is provided with a sparkling bossa substructure, while the second Beatles homage "Eleanor Rigby" oscillates between loose groove, deep melancholy and swing.
