Rough Trade Essential

Radiohead is an alternative rock band from Oxfordshire, England. Formed in 1986 by school friends, they gained worldwide recognition with their hit single "Creep" from the album "Pablo Honey" in 1993. Their second album, "The Bends", solidified their success in the UK with its atmospheric guitar sound and Thom Yorke's emotive vocals. The critically acclaimed album "OK Computer" further propelled them to fame, showcasing their expansive sound and themes of modern alienation. With influences ranging from post-punk to experimental electronic music, Radiohead continues to evolve and push boundaries.
After experimenting with different sounds on albums like "Kid A", they returned to a more conventional rock sound on "Hail To The Thief". In 2007, they made headlines by releasing "In Rainbows" through a pay-what-you-want model. Their latest album, "A Moon Shaped Pool", was released in 2016.
Inspired by bands like The Smiths, Pixies, Joy Division, and R.E.M., Radiohead has carved out their own unique place in the music industry. Known for their thought-provoking lyrics and innovative approach to music production, they have become one of the most influential bands of our time.

An independent record label, XL Recordings was launched in 1989 by Richard Russell and his team. Originally an off-shoot of City Beat Records, XL quickly became known for releasing rave and dance music. Over the years, XL has grown to become one of the leading labels in the industry, managing a roster of talented artists including *Leah Riches*, *a6001996*, and *a60243*. In 1996, XL officially incorporated and became the copyright-holder of its releases. To celebrate their 15th anniversary in 2004, XL launched their XLXV series of re-issues. Today, they continue to thrive as a pioneering force in the music world.

After 15 years of continual, radical transformation, Radiohead found themselves with time, freedom and acquired wisdom. In Rainbows is the result years of jumping into the unknown and pushing one another’s creativity.

From the crunching, fluttering drum machine intro to the opening track "15 Steps" it was clear it was a fully fledged Radiohead classic. As "15 Steps" transitions from an electro beat to a full band number, the currents drag you deep into Radiohead’s idiosyncrasies, by the time Bodysnatchers hits (and it doesn’t half hit) nothing else seems to matter but the burnt out kraut hook and Yorke’s pained whines.

"Weird Fishes/ Arpeggi" and "Reckoner" both appear to be the odd cousins of John Fruscianti’s California funk, in which both the drums are mixed high, giving your heart something to worry about. The solitary moments with Thom Yorke on the backwardly twisted Nude, the serene Faust Arp and Videotape that dooms us all, turning the screw on our human psyche. At times it’s hard not wince in familiarity yet he is not wallowing in self-pity, he is human and articulate and unfortunately for us, we know where he’s coming from.

Previous experiments bleed all over the album, warped electronics, brazen hooks and maudlin melodies while Yorke turns the screw on the human psyche. In Rainbows is Radiohead’s perfect form. The jigsaw falling into place.
