Verve

Verve Records, also known as Verve, is a multinational record label that was founded in 1956 by jazz impresario Norman Granz. The label originated from the consolidation of Granz's earlier labels, Norgran Records and Clef Records. In 1960, Verve was sold to MGM Records and became a subsidiary of the company. Throughout the 1960s, Verve expanded its music genres to include comedy, pop, R&B, rock, and folk music.

During this time, Verve had successful jazz recordings from artists such as Stan Getz, Kai Winding, Astrud Gilberto, Ella Fitzgerald, and Jimmy Smith under the direction of Creed Taylor. In 1972, MGM sold its record division to Polydor which brought Verve into the newly formed PolyGram family of record labels. As a result of this transition, Verve focused primarily on jazz reissues while other non-jazz releases were absorbed into Polydor.

In the late 1980s, PolyGram decided to revive Verve with both reissue programs and new artist signings. This revitalization led to strong sales for both new material and remastered classic recordings. With the merger of PolyGram and Vivendi Universal in 1999 creating Universal Music Group (UMG), Verve Records became part of The Verve Music Group alongside other influential labels such as Blue Note Records and Impulse! Records.

Stan Getz was a highly influential jazz saxophonist, known for his smooth and lyrical playing style. Born on February 2, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, he became one of the most successful musicians of his time. With a career spanning several decades, Getz collaborated with numerous renowned artists and released numerous acclaimed albums. His talent and passion for music made him an iconic figure in the jazz world. Sadly, he passed away on June 6, 1991 in Malibu, California at the age of 64.
Throughout his career, Stan Getz captivated audiences with his melodic improvisations and soulful performances. He played alongside legendary musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker during the bebop era. Getz's signature sound on the tenor saxophone resonated with listeners worldwide.
Getz's discography includes many notable recordings like "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Desafinado," which showcased his ability to blend traditional jazz with Latin influences. His music continues to inspire generations of musicians and remains timeless in its beauty and sophistication.

While the 1953 Bud Shank/Laurindo Almeida recordings were the precursors of the bossa nova-jazz fusion, the 1962 Stan Getz LP, Jazz Samba, would start the bossa nova craze. Producers were quick to exploit that craze in the first half of the 'sixties. Most of the famous jazzmen recorded an album, or at least a couple of tunes in the genre, with uneven results. The genre itself, however, and its fusion with jazz, did not die out quickly. Instead, many modern contemporary jazzmen include bossa nova songs in their repertoire, and dozens of them have become authentic "jazz" standards, as vehicles for improvisations. This is certainly not due to the "novelty" of the rhythm, which certainly passed, but to the high quality of many of the genre's compositions. The album here, now considered a true classic, continues to bring pleasure to a variety of listeners.
