[b]1960[/b] The Impulse! label was started as a jazz subsidiary of [l=Am-Par Record Corp.] under the direction of [a=Creed Taylor] and soon after the label's creation, [a=Bob Thiele].
In the 60s the Canadian versions of the label were manufactured by [l=Sparton Of Canada Ltd.] and wear the [l=Sparton Impulse! Records] label.
[b]1962[/b] The company names changed to [l=ABC-Paramount Records, Inc.] - The [l=Sparton Impulse! Records] remains to mention [l=Am-Par Record Corp.] after the company name changed.
[b]1967[/b] A new change to [l=ABC Records, Inc.] In this period sometimes a second [l=ABC Records] brand appears on the label.
[b]1974[/b] Versions on the concentric label design from the 70s commonly display the [l=ABC Impulse!] label brand.
It operated until 1979, though new recordings had stopped by 1977; it survived on with reissues.
[b]1979[/b] ABC was bought by [l=MCA Records] and Impulse! shut down along with all of the other ABC-affiliated labels.

Impulse is known as [i]The House That Trane Built[/i] because of [a=John Coltrane]'s 1961-67 association with the label.

MCA revived the label mainly as a reissue imprint with a few new releases in the 1980s. It was reactivated as part of MCA-owned [l1071] with new artist signings including [a=Diana Krall] in the 1990s. Following a series of major label buy-outs and mergers, Impulse! is now part of the [l=The Verve Music Group] unit of the larger multi-national [l=Universal Music Group].

Thelonious Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer, born on October 10, 1917 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He is widely recognized as one of the most influential pianists of the twentieth century and a key figure in the development of bebop. Monk's unique improvisational style and prolific compositions have left a lasting impact on the jazz genre. Known for his dissonant harmonies, angular melodic twists, and unconventional approach to the piano, he created music that was both innovative and captivating.

In addition to his musical talents, Monk had a distinct fashion sense with his signature suits, hats, and sunglasses. His stage presence was equally unconventional; often getting up from his piano to dance while his band members continued playing. This idiosyncratic behavior drew comparisons to ring-shout and Muslim Sufi whirling. Notably, Monk is one of only five jazz musicians to be featured on the cover of Time magazine.

Thelonious Monk passed away on February 17, 1982 at the age of 64 in Weehawken, New Jersey. He leaves behind a remarkable legacy as an artist who pushed boundaries and redefined jazz music through his groundbreaking compositions and performances.

Palo Alto is a previously unknown and unreleased live Thelonious Monk recording. After the assassination of Dr.Martin Luther King,Jr. in 1968, racial tensions across the country rose. Palo Alto, a largely white college town in California, was not immune to the events of the day. Danny Scher, a rising junior at Palo Alto High School, had a dream to bring Thelonious Monk to Palo Alto to perform and help bring about racial unity in his community as well as raise funds for his school’s International Committee. After somehow securing Monk’s services to performon Sunday, October 27, Scher initially had trouble selling tickets and convincing people that Monk was even going to show up. With man ytwists and turns along the way and several hundred people waiting in the school’s parking lot to await Monk’s arrival before purchasing tickets, the concert eventually happened and was a triumph in more ways that Monk or Scher could have imagined. This is a recording of that historic concert. Theband is Thelonious Monk - piano, Charlie Rouse – tenor saxophone, Larry Gales – bass and Ben Riley – drums.
