Evie Sands

Singer Evie Sands endured one of the more remarkable hard luck tales in pop music lore. Her records seemed poised for chart success, only to fall prey to industry deception. Born on July 18, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, Sands' husky, soulful voice first attracted attention in 1965 when she signed with Blue Cat label. Despite her debut single "Take Me for a Little While" cracking the R&B charts, it was overshadowed by Jackie Ross' cover due to industry manipulation. Similar misfortunes followed with her subsequent releases like "I Can't Let Go" and "Angel of the Morning." In 1969, Sands finally notched a hit with "Any Way That You Want Me," but soon after retired from performing.

However, in 1996 Sands reunited with songwriter Chip Taylor onstage and they re-ignited their collaboration. The album Women in Prison followed in 1999 and showcased a rootsy feel different from her earlier blue-eyed soul hits of the '60s.

Despite enduring setbacks throughout her career, Evie Sands remains an influential figure in pop music history and continues to captivate audiences with her powerful vocals and timeless songs.
