Product description
still, there is the sea is the debut album from Canadian composer and singer Ambre Ciel. Ambre Ciel is a composer, violinist, pianist, and singer from Montreal, Canada.
She is known for her dreamy, expansive, spacious pop music that is influenced by contemporary classical artists like Agnes Obel, Patrick Watson, Sufjan Stevens, and Thom Yorke. She also draws inspiration from the impressionist world of Debussy and American minimalists such as Phillip Glass and Steve Reich. Additionally, she mentions artists like Gyða Valtýsdóttir, JFDR, and the collaborative work of Jónsi and Alex Somers.
Ambre, who sings in both French and English, comes from a family of singers and artists. Starting violin at six, she later experimented with pedal effects and looping melodies. University studies focused on composition and recording, leading her to explore composing and songwriting more deeply, incorporating layers of violin and voice. Returning to the piano, her 'first' instrument, opened up more harmonic possibilities for her.
still, there is the sea represents a beginning for Ambre, a first and imperfect attempt to create the other world living in her mind. Crafted as a beautifully refined pop album, it makes space for string arrangements, acoustic instruments, and her own beautiful voice.
The enigmatic title came from Ambre's realization that water was a recurring theme throughout the album, representing concepts like mirrors, cyclical movement, inward-looking quests, and storms within one's thoughts. While very much Ambre's personal statement and artistic vision, she received support from Pietro Amato and Owen Pallett. Pietro Amato, from Bell Orchestre and The Luyas, co-produced the album, while Owen Pallett assisted with orchestral arrangements. The FAMES Skopje Studio Orchestra conducted by Sasho Tatarchevski brought Ambre's compositions to life, with other talented musicians contributing to the record.
This debut album from Canadian composer and singer Ambre Ciel is dreamy, spacious, self-contained, fragile, mysterious, yet open and honest. Share in this gift with the world and join this wonderful artist on the first steps of her artistic journey.
