Three Quarter Skies – the band formed by Simon Scott of Slowdive – release the On Fire EP. It includes a first ever vinyl outing for the title track, originally on 2023’s cassette-only EP Universal Flames, but now bigger and better than ever.
It is backed by a stunning remix by Spacemen 3 legend Sonic Boom, alongside reworkings of two tracks from Three Quarter Skies’ acclaimed debut album Fade In by Graham Sutton from post-rock legends Bark Psychosis and LA-based ‘tragic wave’ duo Drab Majesty, who are currently supporting Slowdive on their EU and UK tour.
‘On Fire’ has taken on a life of its own and, live, seems to have evolved over time into something much more trance-like than the edited previously released version,” explains Simon of the reason to revisit the track. “The extended vinyl version mirrors this.
“Then, one of the greats lent his genius to the remix. Sonic Boom has been a huge musical inspiration since I saw Spacemen 3 play at Notre Dame Hall under Leicester Square in London in 1989. His remix brings a hypnotic and fresh dynamic to the motorik mood; it pulsates along the sonic autobahn with a kaleidoscopic eye on the song’s melody and groove.”
Sonic Boom shares his side of the EP with another legend, Graham Sutton from Bark Psychosis.
“They were so ahead of the curve when I discovered their music in the early-’90s,” recalls Simon. “They were a huge inspiration, and I still cherish and play those early 12” records on Cheree, so it’s a huge honour that Graham has remixed ‘Holy Water’. His brooding and sub-heavy reworking brings out the darker undertow of the song. It’s intoxicating!”
Last but not least we have Drab Majesty’s rework of ‘Crows’, originally released as the first single from Fade In and described by Simon as the most personal song he had ever written, with the lyrics addressing the “vivid and surreal loss of both of his parents. The remix adds an appropriately funereal electronic beat and swirling synths that, while making it darker and more gothic, also make it shine.
“Drab are phenomenal live and have played on at least three Slowdive tours now,” says Simon. “As big fans of bands I adore, such as Suicide, Seefeel and Cocteau Twins, I knew they’d create a rather wonderful remix. They heard an early mix of ‘Crows’ and told me how much they loved the song, so I’m delighted this is being released.”
