British post punk & indie funk band formed in 1977 near Manchester. A Certain Ratio took their name from the lyrics of Brian Eno's song The True Wheel (from his album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) (1974). Their first records were released on Factory Records. Over the years there have been changes in line-up and periods of inactivity.
A Certain Ratio is a British post punk and indie funk band that was formed in 1977 near Manchester. Inspired by Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel," they adopted their unique name. Initially signed to Factory Records, they released their first records through this label. Throughout their career, the band has experienced lineup changes and periods of inactivity.
With a blend of post punk and indie funk influences, A Certain Ratio has left an indelible mark on the music scene since their formation over four decades ago. Hailing from Manchester, England, the band derived its name from a lyric found within Brian Eno's iconic track "The True Wheel." Early on, they established themselves as part of Factory Records' roster before embarking on a journey marked by shifts in personnel and intermittent hiatuses.

Founded in 1978 by [a=Daniel Miller], Mute (also known as [l36339]) releases various forms of music, with an emphasis on electronic and experimental pop. In May 2002 the label was acquired by the [l=EMI Group]. In 2010 Miller did an agreement with EMI to handle Mute as an independent label again, licensing the trademark from EMI via his company [l=Mute Artists Ltd.], but EMI kept the rights over Mute's back catalogue. After the EMI Group was dissolved, in 2012 [l206061] acquired [l636]'s back catalogue.

Branch offices exist in Germany ([l168349]) and in North America ([l36296]). 

Mute has spawned many regional and special-interest sublabels, some of which are still active. One offshoot, [l=Parallel Series], even became independent of [l636] Mute also operates Mute Bank Mail Order, which sells the label's merchandise directly to consumers. Mute Bank published two issues of [i]Mute Statement[/i], a softcover book that details the entire discography of the label and includes band profiles and photos of release artwork.

Another label strongly associated with Mute is [l=Toast Hawaii], run by [a=Depeche Mode]'s [a=Andrew Fletcher].

If Good Together saw A Certain Ratio translating the acid house ethos through conventional song, Up In Downsville was a sweat drenched return to the heart of the dance floor. Released on Rob Gretton’s plainly named imprint, the LP shuffles through melodic house, slick acid jazz and brooding electro-funk, pulling together the disparate strands of Manchester’s clubland into one infectious whole. The groove is king throughout but never hits harder than on LP closer Up In Downsville Pt.2, a flute led masterpiece of Mancunian funk which forms a wonderful contrast to enduring Balearic classic Salvador’s (Fish), the album’s finest moment.
