Memphis Slim

American blues pianist, singer, and composer, Memphis Slim was born John Len Chatman in Memphis on September 3, 1915. He adopted his father's name Peter, who was a blues musician. In the 1930s, he moved to Chicago where he was mentored by *Big Bill Broonzy*. It was in 1939 that he began recording as a leader for various record labels including *Bluebird* and *Okeh*. Although known as Memphis Slim, he also published songs under the name *Peter Chatman*. Throughout his prolific career, he recorded for numerous labels such as *Chess*, *Vee-Jay*, and *Columbia*. In 1961, Memphis Slim relocated to Paris where he resided until his passing on February 24, 1988.

Memphis Slim's music is often compared to other influential blues artists such as Sonny Boy Williamson II, Magic Sam, Otis Spann, and Champion Jack Dupree. His unique style of blues piano playing combined with his soulful vocals made him a highly respected figure in the genre.

With a discography spanning decades and collaborations with notable musicians like Willie Dixon and T-Bone Walker, Memphis Slim left an indelible mark on the blues scene. His contributions continue to inspire aspiring musicians today.
