Perez Prado

Perez Prado was a Cuban-born Mexican artist known for his talents as a bandleader, singer, organist, pianist, and composer. Often referred to as the 'King of the Mambo', Prado was born in Matanzas, Cuba in 1916 and passed away in Mexico City in 1989. He began his musical journey studying classical piano before playing organ and piano in local clubs. In 1948, he formed his own band and recorded for RCA Victor, specializing in mambos - an upbeat adaptation of the Cuban danzón. His compositions include famous pieces like "Mambo No. 5" and "Mambo No. 8".

During the height of the mambo movement in 1955, Prado achieved chart success with a cha-cha version of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White", reaching number one on American charts.

Prado's talent caught the attention of audiences worldwide when arranger [a153472] heard his song "Que rico el mambo" while on vacation in Mexico.
