Philip Jeck

Philip Jeck (15 November 1952 - 25 March 2022) was a Liverpool-based artist who studied visual art at Dartington College of Arts. He gained recognition in the early '80s for his innovative work with record players and electronics. Jeck's artistic endeavors spanned various mediums, including soundtracks for dance and theatre companies, solo concerts, and installations.

One of Jeck's most notable achievements was his collaboration with Lol Sargent on "Vinyl Requiem," a groundbreaking performance featuring 180 '50s/'60s record players. This piece earned him the prestigious Time Out Performance Award in 1993. His contributions to radio art were also recognized, as "Coda II" from his "Vinyl Codas I-IV" series won the Karl Sczuka prize.

In his later years, Jeck returned to visual art by creating installations using anywhere from six to eighty record players. Notably, he crafted "Off The Record" for Sonic Boom at The Hayward Gallery in London. Jeck's unique approach involved repurposing old records and salvaged record players found in junk shops, transforming them into musical instruments that formed a distinct personal language.
