Speakers Corner Quartet

Speakers Corner Quartet is a jazz quartet from London, England. Originally the house band at the renowned hip-hop/spoken-word open-mic night Speakers’ Corner in Brixton, they evolved from delivering beats to emcees/lyricists to writing their own unique compositions. With an unconventional lineup of cello, flute, contrabass, and drums, their approach to composition involves using single lines en masse to create chord structures. Influenced by artists such as Zakir Hussain, Olivier Messiaen, Sun Ra, and MF Doom, their music defies categorization with its blend of Asian-classical-jazz-hip-hop elements. They are part of a new movement of musicians known as 12tone.
