Bessie Smith

Bessie Smith was an American blues singer, born on April 14, 1894 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Known as the "Empress of the Blues," she is widely regarded as one of the greatest blues singers of all time. In addition to her remarkable talent, Bessie achieved great success as a vaudeville entertainer and became the highest paid African-American performer during the vibrant twenties. Tragically, she passed away on September 26, 1937 due to injuries sustained in a car accident near Clarksdale, Mississippi.
