Charlie Parker, an American alto saxophonist and composer, was a pioneer of bebop music. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time. Known as 'Bird', Parker was a virtuoso on the saxophone and introduced groundbreaking harmonic ideas into jazz. His innovative use of rapid passing chords, altered chords, and chord substitutions revolutionized the genre.
Parker tragically passed away at the age of 34 in New York City. Although his official cause of death was lobar pneumonia and a bleeding ulcer, he also suffered from cirrhosis and had experienced a heart attack. Remarkably, the coroner who performed his autopsy mistakenly estimated Parker's body to be much older than it actually was.

Savoy Records is an American record label founded in 1942 by Herman Lubinsky, specializing in Jazz, R&B and Gospel. Savoy played an important role in popularizing bebop. The gospel music division's masters and contracts were sold to southern R&B/blues/gospel label Malaco Records in 1986. In 1991, the Savoy catalogue was acquired from Denon by Nippon Columbia Co., Ltd. Denon's parent established the Savoy Label Group in 2002. The Savoy Label Group managed the Savoy catalogue until September 2017 when it was acquired by Concord Music.

Note that many of the Savoy 12" LPs were reissued in the 1960s &amp; 1970s. LPs released between 1950-1962 have "blood red" labels. The first release to solely sport "maroon" labels is MG-12169 (Sun Ra ‎– The Futuristic Sounds Of Sun Ra). However, due to the inconsistency of pressing plants, a few later releases have been found with "blood red" labels as well (most notably MG-12193, "The Marzette Watts Ensemble").

The historic collection produced and compiled by Orrin Keepnews captures Charlie 'Bird' Parker at the beginning of his storied career and presents studio recordings released on the New Jersey based Savoy label and Los Angeles based Dial Records between the years 1944 and 1948. The comprehensive and expansive repertoire showcases not only Bird at a crucial moment of his artistry, but is also is a document of vital performances from the likes of Miles Davies, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Bud Powell, Sarah Vaughan and many others. This is undoubtedly the most ambitious Charlie Parker's compilation of Bird's recorded output of the incredible period during which this remarkable artist first made his presence permanently felt worldwide.

CD: As a bonus, this set presents two additional complete Charlie Parker sessions recorded for Guild in 1945, as well as an extremely rare date from that sameyear with trombonist Clyde Bernhardt and pianist Jay McShann from which only the original broken glass-based (and thus rather noisy) test pressings survive.
