The summer of 2017 saw the return of one of British rock’s most singular and distinctive voices; as Paul Draper, the former Mansun frontman, released his debut solo album Spooky Action.
Spooky Action is an album crafted with the same idiosyncratic songwriting and production that made him a 90’s cult hero, yet with a more personal perspective, and newfound lust for life.
At the peak of their powers, Mansun were one of the UK’s most renowned rock exports - inspiring undying devotion in their fans with a sound so bold it would influence a generation of misfits to pick up guitars and push the envelope. A number one debut album (Attack of the Grey Lantern), a hugely acclaimed boundary pushing follow-up (Six) and numerous radio-hugging singles (brought together on the peerless Legacy collection). Then in 2003, while recording their fourth album Kleptomania, the band split. Over the following years, Draper remained active. He was writing and producing with the likes of Skunk Anansie’s Skin, Menace Beach, The Joy Formidable, as well as his long-term collaborator Catherine AD (aka The Anchoress). However, when he lifted his head above the parapet, the world wanted more - leading fans to start a petition for Draper to unearth his own unreleased tracks and solo material. Riding on this wave of goodwill, Draper released two well-received EPs through Kscope in 2016.
Along with the release of Spooky Action, 2017 also saw Paul Draper’s label Kscope acquire the rights to Mansun’s back catalogue. The ground-breaking label will roll out a reissue campaign over eighteen months that will cover the band’s entire history and enhance their reputation as one of the most iconic and innovative bands of the 90s. Mansun’s four albums – Attack of the Grey Lantern (1997), Six (1998), Little Kix (2000) and the compilation Kleptomania (2004) – were originally issued by Parlophone. These Kscope reissues will bring these classic records into the modern age by delving into a treasure trove of previously unreleased audio and visual material while fully remastering the original recordings for 5.1 and deluxe 180gm vinyl, beginning on June 8th 2018 with the release of Attack Of The Grey Lantern, to celebrate the 21st Anniversary of the album’s release.
Since the release of Spooky Action Paul Draper has completed two hugely successful sell out headline tours of the UK, the latest including Paul Draper performing the Mansun classic Attack Of The Grey Lantern for the first time as a solo artist, a North America tour with Steven Wilson with more headline shows and festival appearances planned into 2019 to support his solo work and the Mansun re-issue campaign.
