Florence Given

American operatic soprano (dramatic) Florence Given was a renowned performer who studied under Elisabeth Schumann at the Curtis Institute of Music. She showcased her talent with various American orchestras and opera companies, as well as in South America. Notably, during her portrayal of Lady Macbeth in New York in 1942, she made headlines for refusing to perform due to a costume dispute. This incident led to Regina Resnik's professional debut as Lady Macbeth. In 1944, Given debuted at the Met and later appeared as a guest at the Greek National Opera in the 1950s. One of her final concerts featured a captivating recital of both ancient and modern Greek music at Gettysburg College on April 25, 1958.
