[b]1960[/b] The Impulse! label was started as a jazz subsidiary of [l=Am-Par Record Corp.] under the direction of [a=Creed Taylor] and soon after the label's creation, [a=Bob Thiele].
In the 60s the Canadian versions of the label were manufactured by [l=Sparton Of Canada Ltd.] and wear the [l=Sparton Impulse! Records] label.
[b]1962[/b] The company names changed to [l=ABC-Paramount Records, Inc.] - The [l=Sparton Impulse! Records] remains to mention [l=Am-Par Record Corp.] after the company name changed.
[b]1967[/b] A new change to [l=ABC Records, Inc.] In this period sometimes a second [l=ABC Records] brand appears on the label.
[b]1974[/b] Versions on the concentric label design from the 70s commonly display the [l=ABC Impulse!] label brand.
It operated until 1979, though new recordings had stopped by 1977; it survived on with reissues.
[b]1979[/b] ABC was bought by [l=MCA Records] and Impulse! shut down along with all of the other ABC-affiliated labels.

Impulse is known as [i]The House That Trane Built[/i] because of [a=John Coltrane]'s 1961-67 association with the label.

MCA revived the label mainly as a reissue imprint with a few new releases in the 1980s. It was reactivated as part of MCA-owned [l1071] with new artist signings including [a=Diana Krall] in the 1990s. Following a series of major label buy-outs and mergers, Impulse! is now part of the [l=The Verve Music Group] unit of the larger multi-national [l=Universal Music Group].

John Coltrane was an American saxophonist and jazz composer. He was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century, known for his contributions to bebop, hardbop, modal jazz, and free jazz. Coltrane recorded over fifty albums as a leader and collaborated with legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. His music evolved to become increasingly spiritual throughout his life. Recognized for his masterful improvisation and iconic centrality to the history of jazz, Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous special citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007.Born on September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA, John Coltrane passed away on July 17, 1967 at the age of forty due to liver cancer. Despite his untimely death, his legacy continues to inspire generations of musicians.Coltrane's musical journey extended beyond himself; he married pianist Alice Coltrane and their son Ravi Coltrane followed in his father's footsteps as a talented saxophonist.

This recording captures so much of what makes John Coltrane arguably the greatest innovator / composer / performer jazz has ever produced. In April 1961 Coltrane assembled a 17-piece orchestra and began recording what would become known as 'Africa/Brass'. Among the jazz luminaries contributing to these landmark sessions are: Booker Little (trumpet), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Julian Priester (trombone), Eric Dolphy (alto sax/bass clarinet), McCoy Tyner (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Elvin Jones (drums). Coltrane manipulates their power into masterful contrasts between the syncopated rhythms of "Greensleeves" or the full-out bop onslaught of "Songs of the Underground Railroad." The amazing virtuosity in Coltrane's solos hints at the future direction his later avant-garde sides would take. The interaction with Tyner on "Songs of the Underground Railroad" is impeccable. He allows room for Jones and Reggie Workman to likewise engage Tyner or some high-spirited improvisation. This is a key work in understanding the path Coltrane's music took in its final phases. 'Africa/Brass' brilliantly documents this pivotal era in the great man's music.
