Joni Mitchell is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and painter born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. She began her career singing in small nightclubs in Western Canada and then busking on the streets of Toronto. In the mid-1960s, she moved to New York City and became famous as both a songwriter and singer. Her personal album "Blue" was ranked #30 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Mitchell's music evolved over time, incorporating jazz influences and addressing social and environmental themes. She is also an accomplished visual artist.

Throughout her career, Joni Mitchell has collaborated with renowned jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus. Her unique guitar style and complex piano arrangements set her apart from other artists of her time.

In recent years, Mitchell has focused more on painting but released her first album of new songs in nine years titled "Shine" in 2007. Despite reducing her recording and touring schedule since the 1980s, she remains a highly influential figure in the music industry.

Rhino Records, also known as Rhino, is a renowned music label that was established in 1973 by Richard Foos. Starting as a record store in Westwood California, Rhino quickly gained recognition with its first successful release "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer in 1975. The label's early logo featured "Rocky the Rhino" and focused on novelty, surf, local new wave bands, and reissues of out-of-print records from other labels.

Under the guidance of Bill Inglot for production, Ken Perry for mastering, and A&R team Gary Stewart and James Austin, Rhino expanded its catalog to include a wide range of reissues by the mid-1980s. The label underwent a logo redesign during this time period to simply "Rhino". In 1984, Rhino released its first CD and became known for manufacturing high-quality CDs made by Sanyo (1984-85) and various manufacturers from Japan or Switzerland thereafter.

In 1985, Rhino entered into a distribution deal with Capitol Records which lasted until 1992. This partnership allowed access to Capitol's back catalog and led to the release of reissues of old Capitol albums. Additionally, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels in 1989. As their deal with Capitol came to an end in 1992, Time-Warner offered an opportunity for growth. Half of the label was sold to Time-Warner

Ladies of the Canyon can be viewed as Joni Mitchell's coming-out party. Having recently moved to Lookout Mountain in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon area – her house is depicted in a watercolour painting she made for the record's cover – the Canadian icon turned to her immediate surroundings for inspiration all the while taking the pulse of national affairs, corporate enterprise, celebrity, and her relationship with Graham Nash. The rather upbeat Ladies of the Canyon also finds the singer-songwriter morphing into the groundbreaker who would shed folk music's constructs and wade into pop, jazz, soul, and poetry with a combination of depth, sophistication, self-examination, and acumen no one had ever heard. Deemed "powerful and brilliant" upon release by The New York Times, this 1970 set marks the first of six consecutive masterworks Mitchell made.
