Josh White

Josh White (1914-1969) was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor, and civil rights activist. He was one of the most popular and influential folksingers in America during the mid-20th century. Known for his powerful voice and guitar skills, White's career was deeply rooted in social and political issues.

White's most famous song, "One Meat Ball," tells the story of a poor man struggling to buy dinner with little sympathy from the waiter. This exemplifies the strong social and political foundation of folk music. Throughout his career, White used his platform to advocate for civil rights and equality.

In the 1940s, he performed at the White House for President Franklin Roosevelt. However, during the McCarthy era in the 1950s, White faced persecution due to his activism. Despite these challenges, he remained dedicated to fighting for justice.

A notable moment in White's career was when he performed at the historic 1963 March on Washington alongside other prominent activists. His legacy lives on through his children Josh White Jr. and Beverly White.
