CBS

The CBS label, established in 1928, was initially created to distribute and market releases on the CBS label overseas. It later became known as CBS Records and played a significant role in promoting *Columbia* releases outside of the US. Due to trademark copyrights, the CBS brand couldn't be used internationally for *Columbia* releases. To market their records globally, CBS set up various companies such as *CBS Disques* in France, *CBS Grammofoonplaten B.V.* in the Netherlands, and *CBS Schallplatten GmbH* in Germany.

In the UK, distribution of the CBS label was initially handled by *Philips Records*, but after acquiring *Oriole Records*, it was renamed to *CBS Coronet*. In Australia and New Zealand, the CBS label replaced the existing *Coronet* label in 1963. These companies also released records by local artists under the CBS label.

In 1988, CBS Records and its sublabels were sold to Japanese company Sony Music Entertainment (formerly known as Sony Corporation). However, Sony only had temporary rights to use the CBS brand for three years until they acquired international rights for Columbia from EMI. On January 1st, 1991, Sony began using Columbia as a worldwide label instead of CBS except in Spain and Japan where other entities held rights to those names respectively. The holding company was renamed Sony Music Entertainment on that same date.
