Westbound

Westbound is an independent music label that was created in Detroit, Michigan by a421732 in December 1968. Specializing in R&B, Soul, Funk, and Disco, Westbound gained recognition for its talented artists such as Funkadelic and Ohio Players. However, financial troubles led to the label's disappearance at the end of the 70s.

Throughout its existence, Westbound had various distribution deals with notable companies. From 1970 to 1975, it partnered with Chess/Janus Records for distribution. Then from 1975 to 1976, Westbound collaborated with 20th Century-Fox Record Corp. The label later worked with Atlantic from 1977 to 1979 and had a joint release with Elektra Records in 1983.

In terms of labeling on releases, Westbound went through some changes over the years. Between 1969 and 1976, the primary label name on releases was Westbound Records. From 1977 to 1983, it simply became Westbound. In the early '90s, Ace Records based in the UK took on reissuing all of Westbound's catalog along with unreleased material under the primary label name of Westbound Records.
