British post punk & indie funk band formed in 1977 near Manchester. A Certain Ratio took their name from the lyrics of Brian Eno's song The True Wheel (from his album Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) (1974). Their first records were released on Factory Records. Over the years there have been changes in line-up and periods of inactivity.
A Certain Ratio is a British post punk and indie funk band that was formed in 1977 near Manchester. Inspired by Brian Eno's song "The True Wheel," they adopted their unique name. Initially signed to Factory Records, they released their first records through this label. Throughout their career, the band has experienced lineup changes and periods of inactivity.
With a blend of post punk and indie funk influences, A Certain Ratio has left an indelible mark on the music scene since their formation over four decades ago. Hailing from Manchester, England, the band derived its name from a lyric found within Brian Eno's iconic track "The True Wheel." Early on, they established themselves as part of Factory Records' roster before embarking on a journey marked by shifts in personnel and intermittent hiatuses.

Please note, some Mute issues also carry an EMI logo. This is not a label and EMI should not be added as a label, it instead indicates that Mute was part of the EMI Group.

Founded in 1978 by [a=Daniel Miller], Mute (also known as [l36339]) releases various forms of music, with an emphasis on electronic and experimental pop. In May 2002 the label was acquired by the [l=EMI Group]. In 2010 Miller did an agreement with EMI to handle Mute as an independent label again, licensing the trademark from EMI via his company [l=Mute Artists Ltd.], but EMI kept the rights over Mute's back catalogue. After the EMI Group was dissolved, in 2012 [l206061] acquired [l636]'s back catalogue.

Branch offices exist in Germany ([l168349]) and in North America ([l36296]). 

Mute has spawned many regional and special-interest sublabels, some of which are still active. One offshoot, [l=Parallel Series], even became independent of [l636] Mute also operates Mute Bank Mail Order, which sells the label's merchandise directly to consumers. Mute Bank published two issues of [i]Mute Statement[/i], a softcover book that details the entire discography of the label and includes band profiles and photos of release artwork.

Another label strongly associated with Mute is [l=Toast Hawaii], run by [a=Depeche Mode]'s [a=Andrew Fletcher].

A Certain Ratio present their recording of the Loco Live at Hope Mill Studios session, originally a live stream of the band’s sensational 2020 album ACR Loco.

After a 12-year hiatus releasing albums, ACR Loco was created by a confident and revitalised ACR. The band had jumped back into the studio after their most successful tour in over 20 years to record ACR Loco, and in the lead up to the release, they filmed and recorded this live session at the heart of the Manchester music scene - Hope Mill Studios. The session featured Maria Uzor of Sink Ya Teeth on vocals and the recorded vocals of the much-missed Denise Johnson.
