US singer, spoken-word artist, activist and author Gil Scott-Heron was born on April 1, 1949 in Chicago, IL. He passed away on May 27, 2011 in New York, NY. Known for his influential work as a spoken word soul performer during the late 1960s and early 1970s, Scott-Heron collaborated with musician Brian Jackson to create a fusion of jazz, blues and soul music. His lyrics addressed social and political issues of the time in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles. His recordings influenced genres like hip hop and neo soul.

Scott-Heron's most well-known composition "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" is often associated with black militant activism. His unique proto-rap style has been praised by Allmusic as having influenced a generation of hip-hop artists.

With his mixed heritage of Black American (maternal) and Jamaican (paternal) descent, Gil Scott-Heron left an indelible mark on the music industry through his powerful words and musical talents.

An independent record label, XL Recordings was launched in 1989 by Richard Russell and his team. Originally an off-shoot of City Beat Records, XL quickly became known for releasing rave and dance music. Over the years, XL has grown to become one of the leading labels in the industry, managing a roster of talented artists including *Leah Riches*, *a6001996*, and *a60243*. In 1996, XL officially incorporated and became the copyright-holder of its releases. To celebrate their 15th anniversary in 2004, XL launched their XLXV series of re-issues. Today, they continue to thrive as a pioneering force in the music world.

In February 2010, the late, legendary musician, poet and author Gil Scott-Heron released his thirteenth, and last, studio album. First conceptualised in 2005, and ultimately produced by XL Recordings head Richard Russell during New York recording sessions that commenced in January 2008, I’m New Here was Scott-Heron’s first album in thirteen years and found him sounding as vital, boundary-pushing and insightful as ever before. On 7th February 2020 - the tenth anniversary of I'm New Here's release - XL Recordings release a limited-edition, expanded version of the album. In addition to the original album, the I'm New Here 10th Anniversary Edition features two unreleased tracks - a cover of Richie Havens’ Handsome Johnny and a previously unheard Scott-Heron song King Henry IV - as well as a selection of other recordings from the original I’m New Here sessions that were only previously available on a rare, vinyl only deluxe version of the LP.
