Joni Mitchell is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and painter born on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. She began her career singing in small nightclubs in Western Canada and then busking on the streets of Toronto. In the mid-1960s, she moved to New York City and became famous as both a songwriter and singer. Her personal album "Blue" was ranked #30 on Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list. Mitchell's music evolved over time, incorporating jazz influences and addressing social and environmental themes. She is also an accomplished visual artist.

Throughout her career, Joni Mitchell has collaborated with renowned jazz musicians such as Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, Herbie Hancock, and Charles Mingus. Her unique guitar style and complex piano arrangements set her apart from other artists of her time.

In recent years, Mitchell has focused more on painting but released her first album of new songs in nine years titled "Shine" in 2007. Despite reducing her recording and touring schedule since the 1980s, she remains a highly influential figure in the music industry.

Rhino Records, also known as Rhino, is a renowned music label that was established in 1973 by Richard Foos. Starting as a record store in Westwood California, Rhino quickly gained recognition with its first successful release "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer in 1975. The label's early logo featured "Rocky the Rhino" and focused on novelty, surf, local new wave bands, and reissues of out-of-print records from other labels.

Under the guidance of Bill Inglot for production, Ken Perry for mastering, and A&R team Gary Stewart and James Austin, Rhino expanded its catalog to include a wide range of reissues by the mid-1980s. The label underwent a logo redesign during this time period to simply "Rhino". In 1984, Rhino released its first CD and became known for manufacturing high-quality CDs made by Sanyo (1984-85) and various manufacturers from Japan or Switzerland thereafter.

In 1985, Rhino entered into a distribution deal with Capitol Records which lasted until 1992. This partnership allowed access to Capitol's back catalog and led to the release of reissues of old Capitol albums. Additionally, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels in 1989. As their deal with Capitol came to an end in 1992, Time-Warner offered an opportunity for growth. Half of the label was sold to Time-Warner

On 22nd June, 1971, Joni Mitchell released Blue, concluding her prolific four album run for Reprise Records with an album considered by many to be one of the greatest of all time. Its stirring, confessional songs have been celebrated by music lovers and critics alike for decades while inspiring a wide variety of artists as diverse as Prince and Taylor Swift. Even today, its stature as a masterpiece continues to grow. Just last year, the album was named #3 on Rolling Stone’s list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”

To celebrate the album’s 50th anniversary, Rhino release the Reprise Albums (1968-1971), the next installment of the Joni Mitchell Archives series, featuring newly remastered versions of Blue (1971) and the three albums that came before it: Song To A Seagull (1968), Clouds (1969), and Ladies Of The Canyon (1970). In the case of Song To A Seagull, the original mix has been recently updated by Mitchell and mixer Matt Lee. “The original mix was atrocious,” says Mitchell. “It sounded like it was recorded under a jello bowl, so I fixed it!”

The cover art features a previously unseen self-portrait Mitchell sketched during the time period. The collection also includes an essay by Grammy winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile, another artist who’s been influenced greatly by Mitchell.
