The Beginning:
On July 28th, 1967, the label Trojan was launched by Island Records, one of the UK's leading independent record companies. Created as a sub-label to showcase the productions of Jamaican producer Arthur "Duke" Reid, Trojan quickly became synonymous with reggae music. The label took its name from Reid's powerful sound system and Jamaican label active at the same time. Despite being short-lived initially, Trojan highlighted some of the finest music from Jamaica during the Rocksteady era. After its demise, Trojan was resurrected and went on to dominate the Jamaican records market in the UK.
In the 60s and 70s, Trojan Records successfully spread Reggae throughout the UK and beyond by licensing Jamaican recordings and producing UK-based acts. The parent company was sold to Allied in the 1970s, who continued releasing records under Trojan Records. In 2001, Sanctuary Records Group Ltd acquired the full catalogue of Trojan Records. Subsequently, Universal Music Group purchased Sanctuary in 2007 and later sold it to BMG in 2013. Since then, BMG has distributed Trojan Records in Europe through PIAS. Reissues on Music On Vinyl since 2017 are handled by Townsend Music.
Trojan continues to be a legendary label that has played a significant role in promoting reggae music worldwide.

Marcia Griffiths is a Jamaican singer, born on November 23, 1949 in West Kingston. She began her professional singing career in 1964 with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires band. Her first hit, "Feel Like Jumping," was recorded at Coxsone Dodd's - Studio One where she collaborated with *Bob Andy* on many duet recordings. Marcia then ventured into solo work on the High Note label under the guidance of Reggae's only established female producer, *Sonia Pottinger*. After ten years in the music industry, Marcia joined forces with *Judy Mowatt* and *Rita Marley* to form the I-Threes, an integral part of Bob Marley's entourage.

With a career spanning several decades, Marcia Griffiths has become an influential figure in Jamaican music. Her soulful voice and captivating performances have earned her recognition as one of reggae's leading female artists. Alongside her collaborations with esteemed musicians such as Bob Andy and Judy Mowatt, Marcia has released numerous successful songs throughout her career.

Known for her versatility and ability to seamlessly transition between genres such as reggae, ska, rocksteady, and dancehall, Marcia Griffiths continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Her contributions to the music industry have solidified her status as a true icon within Jamaican culture.

Arguably the greatest female singer in the history of Jamaican music, Marcia Griffiths first made her mark the Jamaican music scene with a number of popular singles during the late Sixties, before finding international fame in 1970 alongside her long-term friend and sometime collaborator, Bob Andy.

Bob and Marcia’s uplifting reggae version of Nina Simone’s inspiring song, ‘(To Be) Young, Gifted &amp; Black’ hit number 5 in the UK pop chart, with the single proving to be the first of two British chartbusters, with their exuberant interpretation of Pied Piper’ just missing out on a Top 10 placing the following year.

Soon after, Marcia became a member of Bob Marley’s famed backing group, the I-Threes, while also continuing to enjoy solo success with numerous Jamaican hits for a variety of record producers throughout the remainder of the Seventies and well beyond.

And it is the very best of her solo work that features on this ‘Essential Artist’ compilation, the latest release in Trojan Records’ newly launched range that showcases the work of Jamaica’s best-loved ‘foundation’ artists.
