Album artwork for In Concert by Nina Simone

Nina Simone in Concert was her first album for the record label Philips and was made up of three live recordings in Carnegie Hall, New York City in March and April 1964. Backed by a jazz quartet, this is Simone at her most smouldering, doing jazz classics and the civil rights anthems that packed such a passionate punch.

“Here, the singer and pianist is backed by a spare, jazzy quartet, and some of the songs rank among her most socially conscious declarations of African-American pride: ‘Old Jim Crow,’ ‘Pirate Jenny,’ ‘Go Limp,’ and, especially, ‘Mississippi Goddam’ were some of the most forthright musical reflections of the Civil Rights movement to be found at the time. In a more traditional vein, she also reprises her hit ‘I Loves You, Porgy’ and the jazz ballad ‘Don’t Smoke in Bed’.” - Richie Unterberger, AllMusic

Tracks: Black Is The Color Of My True Love’s Hair / The Other Woman / Plain Gold Ring / I Loves You, Porgy / Old Jim Crow / Pirate Jenny / Chilly Winds Don’t Blow / Wild Is The Wind / Little Girl Blue / Don’t Smoke In Bed / Images / Go Limp / Mississippi Goddam / See Line Woman
