Nirvana is a rock band from Aberdeen, Washington, USA. Formed in 1987, they emerged from the Seattle grunge scene of the late 1980s/early 1990s. The power trio brought a new aesthetic to the rock scene at that time. Their major-label debut album, "Nevermind," released in 1991 by DGC/Geffen Records, broke both the band and grunge into mainstream America. Sadly, lead guitarist and vocalist Kurt Cobain's death by suicide in April 1994 marked the end of Nirvana.

The band went through several name changes before settling on Nirvana in March 1988. Prior to that, they were known as Skid Row (6), Pen Cap Chew (2), Bliss (108), Ted Ed Fred, Throat Oyster, and Windowpane.

The final lineup consisted of Kurt Cobain on lead guitar and vocals until his untimely death in April 1994; Krist Novoselic on bass and accordion from March 1987 to April 1994; and Dave Grohl on drums and backing vocals from September 25, 1990 to April 5, 1994.

Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

Re-released in 2009 to mark 20 anniversary of Nirvana's debut album - includes a never-before-released live performance and special packaging. Originally recorded over three sessions with producer Jack Endino at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording Studios in December 1988 and January 1989, 'Bleach' was released in June of '89 and remains unequivocally / unsurprisingly Sub Pop's very favourite Nirvana full-length. The album initially sold 40,000 copies, but was brought into the international spotlight following the release and worldwide success of their 1991 sophomore effort, 'Nevermind'. Subsequently 'Bleach' went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the US alone. This 20th Anniversary Edition was re-mastered from the original tapes at Sterling Sound in a session overseen by producer Jack Endino.CD - Standard 13 Track CD housed in a Digipack.CD + - The deluxe CD includes an unreleased live recording of a complete February 9th, 1990 show at the Pine Street Theatre in Portland, Oregon. The show features performances of 'Love Buzz,' 'About a Girl' and a cover of The Vaselines' song 'Molly's Lips' and has been re-mixed from the original tapes by Endino. It comes with a 48-page CD booklet which includes candid photos of the band not previously released to the public.
