Cherry Red

Cherry Red is a British label that was founded by Iain McNay in 1978. Also known as Cherry Red Records, this label has become associated with the company Music and Media Group. With the label code LC 6730, Cherry Red has made a name for itself in the music industry. It is important to note that this label should not be confused with the US label of the same name.

Evolving from Cleveland's Teutonic protopunks, Pere Ubu was formed in 1975 by David Thomas and guitarist Peter Laughner. Ubu's early singles, "Heart Of Darkness" and "Final Solution," showcased their restless angst before it became popular. With superior musicianship and influences from Thomas's Jehovah's Witness upbringing, Pere Ubu released albums like The Modern Dance and Dub Housing that subverted rock norms. After a split, the band regrouped for more self-indulgent albums through 1982. They returned with renewed focus in 1988 and continued to experiment with pop textures while maintaining their unique sound.

Tim Kerr Records picked up the ball with 1995's Ray Gun Suitcase—a mix of Ubu's vicious rock, luscious pop, and art-damaged identities—and a series of multimedia-enhanced EPs. Throughout their career, Pere Ubu has consistently pushed boundaries and defied categorization. Their music is characterized by Thomas's distinctive warble and their willingness to explore unconventional sonic territories.

With an extensive lineup that has included notable musicians such as Tom Herman, Mayo Thompson, Allen Ravenstine, Tim Wright, Tony Maimone, Scott Krauss, Chris Cutler, Garo Yellin, Robert Wheeler,and Steve Mehlman among others—Pere Ubu continues to create thought-provoking music that challenges listeners' expectations.

Pere Ubu unveil their new album, The Long Goodbye nearly two years after their previous record for Cherry Red, 20 Years In A Montana Missile Silo. Named after Raymond Chandler’s novel, The Long Goodbye is the end of a road. Front man David Thomas has long talked of their journey to Satisfied City: “This wraps up every song and story that Pere Ubu has been telling in different ways for the past forty plus years.”

This Pere Ubu album sounds like no other. It boasts a large expanse of synths due to Thomas writing and arranging the songs alone with his collection of drum machines, synthesizers and a melodeon before sending to the other musicians to complete this unique fusion of techno meets trad rock meets... the avant garage.

2CD - The CD edition boasts a live bonus disc, recorded in December 2018. Former member Chris Cutler rejoined David Thomas, Gagarin and Keith Moliné to play the entire album to a packed theatre in Montreuil, Paris. The show also included the seminal Pere Ubu classic Heart Of Darkness and Neil Young’s Running Dry.

LP - Limited to just 1000 copies, this beautiful vinyl edition is housed in a splendid gatefold sleeve reflecting the film noir-ish artwork, the perfect packaging for the inspiration behindthe album’s title.
