These Portland, Oregon-native female punk rockers were in the middle of the Riot Grrrl scene in the 90s, and they were one of the few to survive the inevitable backlash (along with [a=Allison Wolfe] and [a=Kathleen Hanna]).

Sleater-Kinney (the name) is taken from a local freeway off-ramp. Originally, the band was [a=Corin Tucker] and [a=Carrie Brownstein]'s side-project. The Australian-born [a=Lora MacFarlane] became the band's first permanent drummer in late 1994. In 1997, [a=Janet Weiss] became their new drummer.

After a few albums recorded with [a=John Goodmanson] in Portland, OR (which had become their home town), they went into an unfamiliar studio with [a=Dave Fridmann] in late 2004, to record their first album for Sub Pop. What they came out with divided a lot of opinions, and was the most challenging album for them to record - countless re-takes and tearful sessions were reported at the time.

In the summer of 2006, they announced an "indefinite hiatus", and they played their final U.S. gigs in August.
The statement on their official website offers a glimmer of hope: "As of now, there are no plans for future tours or recordings."

They were in other bands before, during, and after Sleater-Kinney's 11 year run: Corin has been in both [a=Heavens To Betsy (2)] and [a=Cadallaca], Carrie was in [a=Excuse 17] and [a4589038], Laura is in [url=http://discogs.com/artist/561950-Ninetynine/]Ninetynine[/url], and Janet is in [a=Quasi (2)]. 

Weiss announced her departure from the band in 2019.

Short for "Subterranean Pop" 

The label was an outgrowth of [a=Bruce Pavitt]'s Olympia, WA based (print) fanzine, which became the well respected cassettezine of the same name. 

After his move to Seattle he ran a music column in the Seattle Rocket also called Sub Pop.

After initial forays into the record label world with a [a=Green River] 7" (not officially on Sub Pop) and the Sub Pop 100 LP, the label exploded onto the indie scene with four influential colored vinyl 7"s which included [a=Mudhoney]'s "Touch Me I'm Sick" which made the year-end top 10 playlist of nearly every music journalist in the world.

Subsequent hyping of the label in the English music press put them on the map, and grunge was born.

'The Woods' is the seventh and final studio album from Sleater-Kinney, released on May 24, 2005 by Sub Pop. It was produced by Dave Fridmann and recorded from November 2004 to December 2004 at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York. This reissue coincides with Sub Pop's 2014 release of remastered versions of Sleater-Kinney's six other albums, as well as a limited edition, deluxe vinyl box set featuring all seven albums.
