Anti- is an American independent recorded label founded by [a=Andy Kaulkin] in 1998, their first release was Tom Waits "Mule Variations" (1999).


Tom Waits, born on December 7th, 1949 in Pomona, California, is a contemporary artist known for his lyrical and poetical songwriting and raspy gravelly voice. His first album, "Closing Time", was released in 1973. Inspired by early blues and beat poetry, Waits draws influence from artists like Howlin' Wolf and Jack Kerouac.
In addition to his music career, Waits has made a strong presence in the world of movies. He has appeared in works by renowned directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, the Coen Brothers, Jim Jarmusch, Terry Gilliam, and Robert Altman.
Prior to his success in the music industry and film industry, Waits worked as a dishwasher at Napoleone Pizza House in San Diego before being promoted to pizza chef.

Remastered and reissued on Anti. Blue Valentine (1978) is a big departure from earlier Waits albums. Trading the piano for the guitar, Waits is getting rawer and bluesier and the title track is a great example of this. Waits is in transition here, so you also get a stunning orchestrated rendition of Gershwin’s Somewhere, and the beautiful piano ballad, Kentucky Ave., but you also get the juke joint swagger of Romeo Is Bleeding and Whistlin’ Past the Graveyard. This is also the record that contains one of Waits’ most popular songs ever, Christmas Card from A Hooker in Minneapolis.
