Rhino Records, also known as Rhino, is a renowned music label that was established in 1973 by Richard Foos. Starting as a record store in Westwood California, Rhino quickly gained recognition with its first successful release "Go To Rhino Records" by Wild Man Fischer in 1975. The label's early logo featured "Rocky the Rhino" and focused on novelty, surf, local new wave bands, and reissues of out-of-print records from other labels.

Under the guidance of Bill Inglot for production, Ken Perry for mastering, and A&R team Gary Stewart and James Austin, Rhino expanded its catalog to include a wide range of reissues by the mid-1980s. The label underwent a logo redesign during this time period to simply "Rhino". In 1984, Rhino released its first CD and became known for manufacturing high-quality CDs made by Sanyo (1984-85) and various manufacturers from Japan or Switzerland thereafter.

In 1985, Rhino entered into a distribution deal with Capitol Records which lasted until 1992. This partnership allowed access to Capitol's back catalog and led to the release of reissues of old Capitol albums. Additionally, EMI and Rhino acquired the Roulette family of labels in 1989. As their deal with Capitol came to an end in 1992, Time-Warner offered an opportunity for growth. Half of the label was sold to Time-Warner

A Brazilian metal band founded in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, *Sepultura* has become one of the most famous thrash/death metal bands in the world. With their first stable recording line-up established in 1985, including Max on guitar/vocals, Igor on drums, Jairo T. on lead guitar, and Paulo Jr. on bass, this "classic" line-up remained together until 1996 when Max Cavalera left the band over a disagreement. Derrick Green took over vocals in 1998.

Since their formation, *Sepultura* has been considered one of Brazil's most famous cultural exports. Their intense and aggressive sound has garnered them a dedicated fan base worldwide. Influenced by various genres such as punk rock and hardcore music, they have crafted a unique style that blends heavy riffs with powerful lyrics.

Despite lineup changes throughout the years, including Igor Cavalera leaving the band in 2006 due to differences with other members, *Sepultura* continues to create groundbreaking music. They have inspired numerous artists within the metal genre and have influenced bands like *Cavalera Conspiracy*, *Soulfly*, and many others listed among their similar artists.

Sepultura’s acclaimed 1989 album, Beneath The Remains, marks the band’s major label debut on Roadrunner. Widely regarded today as a thrash-metal classic, the album perfectly distilled the Brazilian band’s potent mix of piercing melodies and pummelling rhythms.

In December 1988, brothers Max (guitar/vocals) and Igor Cavalera (drums), Paulo Jr. (bass) and Andreas Kisser (guitar) recorded Beneath the Remains in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with producer Scott Burns. Soon after its release in April 1989, the album was hailed by fans and critics alike for standout songs like Inner Self, Primitive Future and the title track. The album has been remastered especially for this collection.

The Deluxe 2CD Edition also features nine unreleased “mixdown” recordings taken from the Beneath the Remains sessions at Nas Nuvens Studios in Rio de Janeiro. Highlights include versions of Lobotomy and Mass Hypnosis, as well as instrumental versions Slaves Of Pain and Sarcastic Existence.

The studio tracks are complemented by unreleased recordings of the band performing live on September 22, 1989 at the Zeppelinhalle, West Germany. The concert features songs from Beneath the Remains (Primitive Future and Inner Self) and the band’s previous albums (Troops Of Doom and Escape To The Void), along with covers of Black Sabbath’s Symptom Of the Universe and the Dead Kennedys Holiday In Cambodia.
