Founded in 1978 by [a=Daniel Miller], Mute (also known as [l36339]) releases various forms of music, with an emphasis on electronic and experimental pop. In May 2002 the label was acquired by the [l=EMI Group]. In 2010 Miller did an agreement with EMI to handle Mute as an independent label again, licensing the trademark from EMI via his company [l=Mute Artists Ltd.], but EMI kept the rights over Mute's back catalogue. After the EMI Group was dissolved, in 2012 [l206061] acquired [l636]'s back catalogue.

Branch offices exist in Germany ([l168349]) and in North America ([l36296]). 

Mute has spawned many regional and special-interest sublabels, some of which are still active. One offshoot, [l=Parallel Series], even became independent of [l636] Mute also operates Mute Bank Mail Order, which sells the label's merchandise directly to consumers. Mute Bank published two issues of [i]Mute Statement[/i], a softcover book that details the entire discography of the label and includes band profiles and photos of release artwork.

Another label strongly associated with Mute is [l=Toast Hawaii], run by [a=Depeche Mode]'s [a=Andrew Fletcher].

A soul-influenced alternative/indie rock band from Cincinnati, Ohio, the Afghan Whigs were formed in 1986 by vocalist/guitarist Greg Dulli, guitarist Rick McCollum, bassist John Curley and drummer Steve Earle.

After releasing 6 LPs, a number of singles and EPs and a couple of drummers, the group disbanded in February of 2001, temporarily reforming in 2006 to record two new tracks for a best-of compilation.

In December of 2011, the core group of Dulli, McCollum and Curley announced its reformation to play a number of 2012 concert and festival dates, augmented by touring members Cully Symington, David Rosser and Rick Nelson.

The Band’s Classic Album Has Been Remastered And Expanded with Nine Previously Unreleased Demos, Outtakes And Studio Jam Sessions. In 1996, The Afghan Whigs were fresh off the worldwide success of Gentlemen. They had toured the world, graced magazine covers, television performances, major festivals, the works. However, their follow up album would not be Gentlemen II. It would be a pivot and a full public display of the growth and maturity of Greg Dulli’s songwriting. Released in the spring of 1996, Black Love was the Afghan Whigs’ fifth studio album overall. The music was inspired by lead singer Greg Dulli’s idea to make a film noir movie. Although the film was never made, it did help inform the album’s dark tone and fuel songs like the singles Honky’s Ladder and Going To Town. The album opener, Crime Scene Part One was inspired by the screenplay for The Million Dollar Hotel, while Blame, Etc. reflected on the troubled life of Temptations singer David Ruffin. This reissue includes nine previously unreleased recordings. Among the standouts are acoustic versions of Going To Town called: Go To Town and Crime Scene Part Two. Also included is a demo for Faded, which closed the original album, as well as a solo piano cover of the New Order classic Regret. The unreleased material also highlights the band’s creative process with Mick Taylor Jam and Wynton Kelly Jam.
