Tom & Ed met in history class at Manchester University in 1989. They started as DJs known as "The 237 Turbo Nutters" (named after the number of their house on Dickenson Road in Manchester and a reference to their Blackburn raving days). They then opted for "The Dust Brothers,” which they nicked from the L.A. producers of the Beastie Boys' 1989 Album "Paul's Boutique,” as they thought they would never be famous. In 1995 they changed their name to "The Chemical Brothers,” after the real Dust Brothers threatened to sue.

The Chemical Brothers, consisting of Tom & Ed, are an iconic electronic music duo who first came together while studying history at Manchester University in 1989. Originally starting out as DJs under the name "The 237 Turbo Nutters," a nod to their residence on Dickenson Road and memories of raving in Blackburn, they later adopted the moniker "The Dust Brothers." The Chemical Brothers Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands waste no time on their nuclear-weapon of a second album proving they are masters of the techno groove. Dig Your Own Hole opens with a sampled shout-out by old-school gangsta Schoolly D, a syncopated bass line, and a drum loop that gives credence to the song's title, "Block Rockin' Beats". This smorgasbord of sounds - a hallucinatory interweaving of hip-hop, techno, trance and the Chemicals' trademark synthesized guitar loop - builds up and cold-rocks the first five minutes of the record like a tsunami crashing ashore. Unlike most productions in the electronic / dance-music universe, the music on Dig Your Own Hole also has the weight of great rock and roll.

What makes Dig Your Own Hole the personification of modern pop music at its chaotic best, and a funky agent of change.
